RESEARCH TECHNICIAN, School of Medicine, Vice Chair for Research

Boston University Boston, MA
  • Posted: June 07, 2019
  • Full-Time

The ability to characterize complex biological samples at single cell resolution is allowing researchers to gain detailed insights into cancer evolution and developmental processes. High-throughput single cell genomic assays, such as single cell RNA-seq and DNA-seq are cornerstones of this advancement. To meet the growing need of single-cell research at Boston University Medical Center (BUMC), the Department of Medicine in the School of Medicine has initiated the development of the BUMC Single Cell core. This core will contain a team of computational biologists and bench scientists working together to efficiently implement single-cell assays and run microfluidic devices for investigators on campus. The core is directed by Dr. Yuriy Alekseyev and co-directed by Drs. Evan Johnson and Joshua Campbell.

We are looking for a self-motivated, collaborative individual with extensive experience in cellular and molecular biology to join the BUMC Single Cell core. Duties involved in this position include:

  • Perform dissociation of tissues using a combination of mechanical and enzymatic digestion to efficiently release individual cells or nuclei in solution.
  • Perform antibody staining and evaluate antibody conjugate panels (e.g. CITE-seq).
  • Work with individual investigators and members of the flow cytometry core to optimize and apply dissociation and antibody staining protocols for individual projects.
  • Collaborate with investigators from a diversity of departments and institutions.
  • Maintain accurate records and evaluate data to make appropriate recommendations.
  • Perform tasks related to the administration of the lab including inventory and sample tracking and organization.
  • Maintain currency in advancements of techniques and technologies used for single cell and single nuclei sequencing.
  • Duties may require work outside of regular work schedules and travel offsite.

Necessary skills:
  • Cell culturing, dissociation, and counting
  • Antibody staining, flow cytometry, and FACS
  • General knowledge of molecular biology techniques
  • Communicate in a personable and timely fashion
  • Ability to work under deadlines across multi-level projects

Required Skills
1-3 years' work experience required. Excellent communication skills in both spoken and written English are required.
  • Bachelors (required), Masters (preferred), equivalent degree in cell biology, biotechnology, biomedical engineering, or related fields
  • Excellent communication skills in both spoken and written English are required.
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving abilities are required.
  • Experience in use of technology for project management and data recording is required.
  • S. permanent residency status or ability to obtain visa is required.
  • Experience performing cell culture and flow cytometry is required.
  • Experience developing or applying dissociation techniques in the context of single cell RNA-seq is helpful, but not required.

We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
