Shift: M-F, hours will vary with the needs of the clinic; will participate in call rotation

Positions Summary: The Orthopedic Physician Assistant provides patient care services by evaluating, treating, and triage of patients within the scope of individual authority granted by the applicable governing Idaho State Board and the supervising/collaborating physician. 

Essential Functions:

  • Examines injured/ill patients, performs comprehensive physician examinations for medical surveillance and compiles patient medical data accurately, completely and timely
  • Performs comprehensive health histories, physical examinations, diagnostic laboratory interpretations and patient education
  • Administers or orders diagnostic tests, such as x-ray and laboratory tests and interprets test results for deviations from normal
  • Performs routine outpatient procedures and surgeries including: regional anesthesia, incision and drainage, wound care closure and management, injections, and aspirations as credentialed and appropriate
  • Assists in surgery, performing actions delegated by physician
  • Conduct hospital rounds, write orders and perform other administrative and clerical tasks as needed
  • Protects confidentiality of health information according to HIPAA
  • Provides patient care services such as wound suturing and dressing changes
  • Writes appropriate orders including those for narcotics, stimulants and depressant drugs, as authorized
  • Performs emergency life-saving procedures in cases such as cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest and similar emergencies
  • Trains and participates in emergency response duties and responsibilities as needed
  • Maintains all required training and certifications
  • Performs related assignments as required including education, wellness promotion and procedure/protocol development
  • Helps train and ensure quality performance of laboratory tests, such as PFT, audiogram, and vision testing by the ancillary staff
  • Practices safety, environmental and/or infection control and other applicable standards
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participating in educational programs, conferences, seminars, current literature, inservice meetings, and workshops as relevant to this practice and in keeping with time constraints
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span, assess and interprets data considering developmental and age status and plans an approach based on each patient’s requirements, relative to age specific needs for the following groups: neonate, pediatric adolescent, adult, geriatric


  • Skills:
    • Ability to provide professional care based on training, competence and judgment
    • Must have full capacity to read, write and comprehend as well as full capacity to make complex and routine medical judgments
    • Must have contemporary skills and documented CME’s
    • Basic computer literacy and ability to effectively learn new software programs required
  • Education: Graduate from an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program; Minimum of three (3) years experience in an Orthopedic care setting required
  • Licenses and Certifications required:  Current state of Idaho NP or PA license; BLS and ACLS
  • Supervisory: None - works as trainer and assigns tasks as a team member with support staff
  • Supervised by: Director Practice Management
