Fitness Instructor Part-Time- Zumba

POSITION SUMMARY: This position will work closely with residents to improve their quality of life through fitness and nutrition. Incumbent must be able to develop and implement individual and group physical fitness programs, conduct personal fitness assessments and basic health screenings, teach a variety of exercise classes, and provide assistance on weight machines and cardio equipment, to include addressing individual fitness needs and developing fitness programs.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a working knowledge of anatomy and physiology, understand the basic principles of exercise physiology, know the importance of physical fitness and proper nutrition for health and overall functioning, and be able to identify the proper body mechanics to be used during exercise as they apply to older adults. Must be energetic, physically fit, present a professional image and reflect a positive attitude, have the ability to speak in front of a group, and enjoy working with older adults. Incumbent must be a self-starter with demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to work with limited supervision as well as harmoniously with other departments. Must be able to speak, read, write, and follow verbal and written instructions in English.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Required: High school diploma or equivalent. Experience working with the elderly. Preferred: Bachelor's degree in a related field of study desired.
EQUIPMENT AND COMPUTER OPERATIONS: Must be able to safely and properly operate on-site fitness and exercise equipment and train others on the use of same. Training will be provided to familiarize incumbent with work-related equipment to ensure safety and proper use of same.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS: Required: Current certification as a Group Fitness Instructor from a nationally recognized organization, current Zumba instructor license, as well as current cardiopulmonary resuscitation, First Aid, and automated external defibrillator certifications. Preferred: Pilates/Yoga Instructor, Water Fitness Instructor (certification required, if assigned to teach water aerobics), and Group Fitness or Personal Trainer certifications, preferably specializing in senior physical fitness, also desirable. Ongoing education highly recommended.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Teaches a variety of exercise classes to include strength training, cardio and flexibility type classes, and water aerobics.
- Trains residents on safe and proper use of fitness and exercise equipment and offers assistance when needed.
- Promptly reports any resident behaviors, health concerns, or physical injuries requiring attention, and uses universal precautions when administering care.
- Works with physical therapist in referring residents for treatment and providing continuing therapy exercises.
- Cleans fitness and exercise equipment as needed.
- Ensures that individual and BST resident fitness goals and exercise needs are being met; assesses ability levels on an ongoing basis to validate overall health and wellness improvement.
- Coordinates efforts with other departments to create a solid wellness and fitness operation.
- Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
INTERNAL CONTROL: Within the scope of position duties, responsible for seeing that operations are effective and efficient, assets are safeguarded, and applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures are complied with. This position will handle confidential information and must treat such with appropriate sensitivity.
PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS: Work is generally performed indoors in a climate-controlled gym, designated fitness area, or heated pool. Occasional lifting and transfers of light loads of less than 30 pounds required. Incumbent must be in excellent physical condition in order to perform exercises while teaching various group classes several times per day. If teaching water aerobics, must be an excellent swimmer certified as a Water Fitness Instructor and able to assist older adults in and out of the pool. Bending, squatting, and reaching are necessary, as well as commuting between the two BST campuses. Few environmental hazards are present, although the threat of communicable disease exists. Mild cleaning products, waxes, and soaps are used in the immediate area. Mild pesticides are used periodically to control bug infestation.
WORK SCHEDULE: Work hours are on a part-time basis, and vary from 9:00 am to 4:00, Monday thru Friday..
WORK LOCATION: Travel between the two campuses is an essential part of this job and may also be required in the greater San Antonio area. When this occurs, mileage reimbursement is authorized.
ATTIRE/DRESS CODE: Conservative fitness attire is appropriate. One-piece swim suit will be worn while in the pool area. BST employee ID badge or name tag must be worn, as appropriate, at all times while on duty. See employee handbook for specific guidelines. RANGE OF PAY: Dependent upon qualifications and experience, with the intent to be competitive within the market.
