Job Description

The R&D Scientist is a skilled professional and is proficient and responsible for executing assigned projects which involve the research, development and testing of new OTC Drug or Cosmetic products, technologies, packaging, and product improvements. In this role, he/she will work with nominal guidance from the R&D Section Manager or Supervisor to successfully incorporate the scientific, technical, regulatory, competitive, cost, operational, project timing, work prioritization and strategic considerations to support a successful product organization. He/she will have substantial product development experience, technical formulation knowledge, the capacity to translate marketing needs into new products, and product scale-up knowhow. This person will have the ability to recognize situations in their entirety and be able to anticipate when alternative options are necessary. Other R&D related or laboratory projects will also be assigned commensurate with their capability. The R&D Scientist is skilled and demonstrates success in matters such as maintaining quality, accuracy, and quantity of work. Has success in solving complex technical problems.   He/she is proficient with the ability to communicate technical details effectively within areas of responsibility. Demonstrates consistency with the ability to write technical updates, technical reports, memos, regulatory documents, operating procedures, protocols, experimental design, data analysis and other communication as needed. Can successfully deliver effective presentations to a variety of audiences. This person has proven experience in electronic forms of data analysis techniques and communication. The R&D Scientist understands and adheres to Good Laboratory practices, cGMP, safety regulations and confidential procedures. He/she understands the importance of and takes the initiative to contribute to the routine functioning of the R&D laboratory. He / she will also demonstrate the ability to mentor / coach junior staff. The R&D Scientist collaborates with internal or external partners involved with clinical testing, claims substantiation, formulation development, raw materials, manufacturing, or contract manufacturing.


  1. Proficiently formulate and scale up all formulation types.
  2. Understands the physical, chemical, biological, engineering, microbiological, and regulatory aspects to anticipate issues during the development and technology transfer process.
  3. Proficient understanding of formulation laboratory equipment (e.g., mixers, balances, hot plate, filling equipment, lipstick molds etc.) and its impact during technology transfer.
  4. Deep understanding of all the production equipment capabilities and its impact on all formulation types.
  5. Independently applies the overall understanding of raw materials and chemical compatibility in formulation development and technology transfer.
  6. Introduces new raw material technologies to aid the product development process and / or overall product experience.
  7. Provide solutions to the vendors to address raw material issues.
  8. Consistently maintains accuracy of formulation, procedures, results, data, and conclusions.
  9. Comfortably use brand hearts to ideate new concepts and consumer product usage trends.
  10. Understands new industry trends and newly emerged consumer product technologies.
  11. Consistently demonstrates the ability to apply all available formulation information to the development of a robust formulation and provide support to colleagues when troubleshooting formulation issues.
  12. Proficient and consistently analyzes technical data or qualitative feedback.
  13. Can independently make recommendations based upon analysis.
  14. Understands the physical, chemical, and microbiological concepts and regulatory requirements involved in the assessment of OTC drug and consumer products.
  15. Knowledgeable and routinely applies the concepts involved in assessing stability of OTC drug and consumer products.
  16. Can troubleshoot, avoid and / or recommend solutions to complex stability issues.
  17. Consistently prepares formulation spreadsheets and accurately completes complex calculations related to formula development.
  18. Effectively designs experiments to understand of solve formulation issues.
  19. Demonstrated knowledge in the application of statistics.
  20. Consistently and effectively make recommendations using data generated from experiments.
  21. Continues to demonstrate ability to successfully transfer complex information to Quality and Operations.
  22. Demonstrated ability to solve problems encountered during "scale up".
  23. Good understanding of the problems that often occur during scale up to anticipate issues during the development and technology transfer process.
  24. Provides mentoring and technical support to the junior colleagues.
  25. Proficiently understands and applies OTC drug monograph and cosmetic regulations to formulation development and ingredients selection.
  26. Demonstrated understanding or the impact of federal, state, global, and local regulations on the product life cycle and formulation development while strategically solve formulation issues that could be affected by these regulations.
  27. History of applying cGMP concepts into the product development process, including following, and tracking of product stability profiles and performance.
  28. Knowledge of current US, EU, and Global regulations, ICH guidance and relevant standards and quality requirements.
  29. Successfully substantiate marketing claims using clinical testing methods.
  30. Understands ingredient function and relationship to test methods.
  31. Can develop and execute clinical protocols to substantiate product claims.



  1. Suggests or performs special projects, as assigned, or agreed to by the Manager or Supervisor, R&D, which enhance and contribute to the growth of the Research & Development Department.
  2. Performs and assumes other duties and responsibilities, as may be required by the Manager or Supervisor, R&D.
  3. Supports the Winner’s Circle and Blistex Quality System processes.


  1. Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, or related scientific discipline with 5-7 years of applicable laboratory experience preferably in the cosmetics or pharmaceutical OTC industry.
  2. Master's degree in Chemistry, Biology, or related scientific discipline with 3-5 years of applicable laboratory experience preferably in the cosmetics or pharmaceutical OTC industry.
  3. Ph.D. degree in Chemistry, Biology, or related scientific discipline with 1-3 years of applicable laboratory experience preferably in the cosmetics or pharmaceutical OTC industry.
  4. Consistently demonstrates good mathematical ability and analytical skills. Accurately calculates percentages, formula costs, basic statistics. Applies concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Readily performs spreadsheet mathematical and graphical analysis.
  5. Proficiency with computers and in Microsoft programs including Outlook, Word, Power Point and Excel.
  6. Ability to learn new software such as ELN and Regulatory Documentation programs.
  7. Understands and follows appropriate lab safety practices.
  8. Proficient at effective communication skills for interactions with laboratory colleagues, project managers, and colleagues from numerous functional areas.
  9. Able to present complicated technical issues in a variety of business settings.
  10. Proficiently demonstrates the ability to efficiently prioritize one's project work on a daily basis independently.
  11. Constantly demonstrates good judgement during the performance of projects and interactions with groups and vendors to manages deliverable on time.
  12. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment, manage multiple priorities, exercise sound judgement, be well organized, take the initiative, be flexible, work well under pressure and produce accurate and timely work.
  13. Constantly and effectively employs ingenuity and creativity in addressing departmental and company's opportunities and challenges.
  14. Proficient at finding and implementing solutions not just identifying problems.
