Job Description

Big Spaceship is looking for an experienced Editorial Director to help us evolve our cultural intelligence practice and build a community platform to share it with our clients and partners.

You are eternally curious youre always reading, listening, watching, and sharing your opinions on the latest in human behavior, strategy, product innovation, and big (maybe scary) ideas. You trust your gut and have an innate understanding of what a diverse group of ambitious people want (and more specifically, need) to be talking about. You might just be skeptical of the content-industrial complex!

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • The care and engagement of Big Spaceships community of executives, marketing professionals, makers, and thinkers.
    • Identify the topics, formats, and ways of learning and thinking together that provide value for community members
    • Give form and purpose to Encourage and inspire community members to actively participate in community activities, conversations, and events (to be determined)
  • Defining the tech stack to make Big Spaceships audience community come to life
  • Defining ownable content strategy across Big Spaceship products (e.g. Reveal, Internet Brunch, Platform Updates), insights that arise as part of our client work, and select external writers/thinkers
    • Establish a strong POV on topics and trends for Big Spaceship to own the conversation about, grounded in competitive and trend research
    • Work in partnership with internal teams to continually guide internal and external stakeholders towards bold and innovative topics, and identify long-term opportunities outside of given briefs
    • Establish yourself and other Big Spaceship discipline leads as thought leaders in those topic and trend areas, including authoring and presenting on thought leadership, and thoughtfully editing and partnering with team members
    • Develop high-level content calendar and programming strategy for owned and partner events and publications, including identifying the right speakers and thinkers for the right topic
  • Running an insights 'newsroom' to bring content to life
    • Research, author, and moderate community programming and content
    • Maintain a deep understanding of culture, identifying macro and micro shifts in the landscape
    • Identify and manage internal and external authors to develop timely content for our community and beyond
  • Launch proprietary content in diverse ways, from events to text to emerging platforms

Requirements

  • 6+ years of experience in an editorial environment
  • Proven track record in building and engaging a vibrant external community, preferably within a startup or creative environment
  • Audience development experience understanding the basics of improving an offering in order to bring greater value to readers / listeners
  • Experience moderating a closed community including but not limited to Slack, Discord, Reddit, Facebook Groups, etc.
  • Deep understanding of the marketing and advertising industry as well as adjacent industries (tech, startups, consultancies), and the world in which they speak and work (publications, conferences, who theyre following on Twitter/Clubhouse/etc)
  • Experienced in competitive and trend research, whether in an editorial or strategy context
  • Plugged in to a network of speakers, writers, and thinkers; can create a newsroom and recruit the right folks to supplement your content strategy
  • Some experience in both the digital and IRL events space
  • Familiarity with established and emerging community and content platforms
  • Keen interest in emerging and evolving culture (however you define it!)
  • Openness to change and experimentation, and an understanding of how to measure success, and what to learn from not-so-successful moves
  • Experience managing and working with clients across seniority levels (from celebrities ot C-suite to marketing managers)
  • Comfortable managing up and across teams
