Behavioral Health Intervention Services (BHIS)

BHIS are supportive, directive, and teaching interventions provided in a community-based environment designed to improve an individual’s level of functioning as it relates to mental illness. The primary goal is to assist the individual and his or her family to learn age-appropriate skills to manage his or her behavior, and regain or retain self-control.

When an individual is referred to the program, individual family members may also receive services if treatment intervention is indicated.

The program goal is to enhance the family's ability to support the child in making behavioral changes, which will in turn promote an improved mental health.

Bethany for Children & Families is looking to expand our mental health services division with a qualified Behavioral Health Counselor to join the BHIS team. This position will be working in the North Scott School District in Iowa.

Behavioral Health Counselor Job Description:

The Behavioral Health Counselor will provide skill-building interventions that improve symptoms of mental health challenges and associated behavior. Behavior intervention includes services designed to modify the psychological, behavioral, emotional, cognitive, and social factors affecting a member’s functioning. The Behavioral Health Counselor will work to enhance a client's quality of life by teaching skills needed to be successful in the home, school, and community environments.

Behavioral Health Counselor Position Benefits:

Behavioral Health Counselor Performance Objectives:

  • Assist clients in learning appropriate ways to manage mental health challenges
  • Empower clients to improve day-to-day functioning
  • Consistently meet with BHIS clients to ensure utilization of authorized units
  • Provide professionally appropriate transportation as necessary to accomplish treatment goals
  • Establish positive relationships with clients, family and their support network
  • Develop the clients’ service plans and review the plans every 90 days
  • Manage the prior authorization process
  • Provide clinical supportive interventions in accordance with the service plans
  • Document service provisions, progress notes and contacts with clients within the clinical record
  • Ensure documentation requirements are met for BHIS services in a timely manner
  • Coordinate services and build a support network around clients by working with authorized collateral sources such as parents, teachers or other community agencies as appropriate
  • Make necessary referrals and serve as a liaison with other agencies
  • Attend department and agency meetings as required
  • Represent the agency at community events and networking opportunities

Behavioral Health Counselor Qualifications:

  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree in a social sciences field with 1 year of experience in child mental health services (required) OR,
  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree in a non-social science field with 2 years’ of experience in child mental health services (required)
  • Have the ability to provide own transportation in performing job requirements, including a valid driver’s license and acceptable insurance coverage
  • Be able to successfully pass agency-required background checks
  • Have computer competency
  • Be able to work some evening/after school hours and weekends as needed
