The Webmaster oversees the design, development, and maintenance of the BSC website. Duties will include, but not be limited to, updating and developing new web content and graphics, training other staff to update content and use the website, guiding the creation and implementation of long-term plans to improve website functionality, diagnosing and repairing any problems with the website or databases, tracking site usage/statistics, ensuring and improving security features, regularly backing up content, and maintaining hosting and third-party relationships on which the functionality of the website depends. They are also responsible for building, improving, and troubleshooting web-based applications. The Webmaster ensures that the BSC maximizes the functionality of the Google Education Application Suite and acts as the primary email administrator. They are also responsible for managing and enhancing the BSC’s use of online social media and consistent design standards in order to achieve organizational communications goals.
Applicants must have a college degree and at least three years’ of professional experience as a webmaster, information technology specialist, or comparable position. They must have excellent writing and editing skills; experience with Google Applications; command of HTML, CSS, and other mark-up languages; fluency in one or more web Content Management Systems, such as Drupal or Joomla; the ability to effectively use desktop publishing software such as InDesign or Pagemaker; understanding of cross-browser capability issues, W3C web design standards, accessibility and usability; the ability to troubleshoot problems with web hosting services and leverage hosting service interfaces (such as CPanel) to carry out necessary tasks (e.g. back-ups, restoring previous versions of the site, security enhancements, etc.); and experience with online payment methods and e-commerce, particularly relating to donations.
The ideal candidate will have one or more of the following additional qualifications:
· Degree in computer science, software engineering, information science/management, communications (with a strong emphasis in electronic communication), or comparable field.
· Experience managing an organization’s use of Google Applications, including Gmail, docs, sites, groups, and calendar (especially the Education Edition).
· Command of other markup languages, including MediaWiki markup.
· Familiarity with free and open-source software use and development.
· Knowledge of Linux-based operating systems for web server use.
· Experience living in and/or working with cooperatives.
This is a 20 hour/week job (hours can be worked as part of a three to five days/week schedule, depending on needs of applicant) with a starting wage of $27.44/hour. Benefits and other conditions of employment are pursuant to a collective bargaining (union) agreement, which provides for annual cost-of-living pay increases, annual performance-based raises and/or bonuses, and paid holidays, vacation and sick leave for part-time employees.
