Reports to Director of Special Education/School Site Principal
Position Objective: While under the direct supervision of the Director of Special Education, the Special Education Coordinator will support and promote Benjamin Franklin Charter School’s instructional program in a learning environment that motivates and guides students to develop and fulfill their academic potential.
Core Job Functions (or Essential Duties and Responsibilities)
Support BFCS Vision, Mission, and Goals.
Promote and adhere to BFCS policies and procedures.
Provide a safe, structured environment focused on academic excellence.
Help create a learning environment that is engaging and conducive to effective instruction; maintain standards of student behavior.
Support special education teachers in evaluating the specific needs of students for the purpose of properly aligning instruction.
Monitor and assess student progress; provide ongoing feedback to teachers.
Use classroom and state assessment data to inform and improve instruction.
Participate in team reviews concerning students’ academic progress.
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with parents and other professionals on a regular basis.
Maintain accurate, complete, and legible records as required by law and school policy.
Reflect on teaching practices; strive to improve professional competence.
Participate in school-wide events and scheduled meetings.
Train and support special education teachers throughout the organization.
Maintain professionalism and confidentiality as it pertains to special education.
Comply with all state and federal special education laws.
Attend all provided trainings.
Support special education teachers with effectively developing and implementing Individual Education Plans.
Maintain an updated calendar with special education teachers to ensure timeline compliance.
Work collaboratively with all staff (i.e. teachers, contracted service providers, therapists, administration, etc.).
Support special education teachers with the development and implementation of strategies for a range of academic and behavioral needs.
Support special education teachers by observing in their classrooms once a month.
Schedule monthly meetings with each special education teacher to discuss the observation.
Schedule monthly meetings with the special education department.
Collaborate with special education teachers to identify at risk or high need students. Meet with those students regularly to ensure progress and involvement.
Maintain open office hours providing students with accomodations (i.e. tests read, small group/one on one testing environment, eliminate one distractor, etc.).
Ensure that all special education teachers monitor and assess student progress and maintain appropriate documentation for IEP data collection.
Complete the Transition Plan portion of the IEP, including but not limited to administering, conducting and reporting on student surveys.
Schedule and plan for all incoming 7th grade students to BFHS.
Review draft IEPs for compliance prior to meetings.
Administer and score formal achievement assessments for all initial evaluation and three year reevaluations.
Complete and assign classroom observations necessary for special education paperwork.
Accurately compile and complete all MET reports throughout the organization.
Receive incoming Child Study Team referrals for comprehensive evaluations and begin the evaluation process.
Receive incoming parent requests for comprehensive evaluations.
Conduct eligibility determination meetings.
Serve as the 504 Coordinator at the 7-12 level.
Ensure non-discriminatory educational practices
Monitor a Section 504 referral/identification/review process
Maintain data on Section 504 referrals
Consult with site administrator
Collaborate with teachers
Meet any additional specific job requirements as indicated by the school site or District.
