Job Description

A Research Associate position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Kyle Eagen in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology. The Research Associate will expand upon a dynamic research program dedicated to understanding the molecular basis of nuclear organization and 3D genome architecture. They will be responsible for taking on highly interdisciplinary projects and critical functions in this endeavor using tools from molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, and genomics, including next-generation DNA sequencing technology. In addition, they will work side-by-side with Dr. Eagen to develop advanced scientific skills alongside opportunities to present research findings at conferences and network with colleagues.

The ideal candidate should be highly motivated, well organized, manage time effectively, and be able to work independently as well as part of a team. They will obtain fundamental, career-building exposure in genomics, molecular biology, cell biology, and biochemistry as they conduct lab research and assist in leading and designing projects.

General Responsibilities
  • Design, set up, conduct, and troubleshoot experiments.
  • Evaluate experimental results and recommend changes to improve data quality and validity. Complete mathematical calculations to assist in data analysis.
  • Apply their advanced skillset to research projects:
    • Molecular Biology
      • Isolate and purify DNA, RNA, and/or protein
      • Perform PCR and prepare plasmids
      • Clone and sequence DNA
    • Cellular Biology
      • Cell culture, transfection, and transgene expression
      • CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing
      • Functional studies
  • Administrative
    • Maintain detailed records of research experiments and data
    • Prepare charts and graphs for presentations and publications
    • Search and evaluate scientific literature in support of research projects
    • Write portions of grant applications, manuscripts, and publications
    • Co-authors scientific papers
  • Effectively interact with team members to make important contributions on big problems while ensuring high scientific standards

Completes other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Basic Science or a related field. Experience in lieu of degree will not be accepted.
  • Three years of relevant experience typically as a Research Assistant, Research Technician or Postdoctoral Fellow/Associate

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in molecular biology and genomics techniques, such as Hi-C, ChIP-seq, CUT&RUN, and/or RNA-seq
  • Experience in cell biology, such as cell culture and/or CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • A record of taking initiative to solve problems and working to high-quality standards
  • Attention to detail and accurate record keeping
  • Ability to multitask, work and learn independently, and be self-motivated
