Job Description
 

The Environmental Scientist I position will require both field (~90%) and office (~10%) work. Field work is in a high desert climate in variable weather conditions and terrains. Office work will be in BGI’s office in White Rock, New Mexico. Candidate must live in White Rock or Los Alamos, NM, or be willing commute to the office each day.

The Environmental Scientist I will work under the supervision of a Senior Field Supervisor and Project Manager.

Field activities include but are not limited to:

  • Visual inspection, documentation, and sample collection of various media to include soil, sediment, rock, water, air/vapor for investigation and characterization purposes
  • Conducting site remediation, observation, and documentation activities include monitoring and visual inspection of sites
  • Actively participating in daily pre-job briefings and safety meetings


Office activities include but are not limited to:

  • Maintenance, quality assurance, analysis, and interpretation of data
  • Assistance with the preparation of reports and technical documents associated with field sampling and other field related tasks, including generation of data tables, graphs, and figures.
  • Submission/request for sample bottle kits, labels, and associated paperwork
  • Ensuring any required work permits are current
  • Quality assurance of data tables, charts, and figures for reports


Additionally, the Environmental Scientist I may conduct field mapping, map preparation, routine scientific calculations, or utilize computer programs to assist with daily and report writing activities.

The Environmental Scientist I will follow BGI company safety standards, participate in safety trainings, and assist in preparation and implementation of environmental, health, and safety plans.

Role Requirements

BS in Environmental Science, Geology, or related technical degree (MS preferred).

0–5 years environmental or field experience.

40-hour HAZWOPER OSHA Training desired.

Proficiency with MS Office products including MS Word and Excel. AutoCAD and GIS experience is a plus. Computer programming and troubleshooting experience is a plus.

Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Attention to safety, quality, detail, and strong time management capabilities required.

Will be required to lift equipment and carry laboratory samples/equipment which may weigh up to 40 pounds.

Ability and willingness to work in a high-desert field setting with the potential to work in adverse weather conditions. The field environment will require, but not be limited to, excessive walking/hiking, standing, bending, kneeling, and sitting.

May be required to work a flexible schedule to meet project requirements or deadlines.

Must pass a drug test, physical, and background check and must have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the Company's driving policy.
