Ballast Point/Kings & Convicts Quality Analyst II Position

Position Summary

The Quality Analyst II is a senior-level employee who ensure our products meet the required safety and quality standards before they are sold to consumers. Quality Analyst II are involved in the entire course of manufacturing, They may inspect components before assembly, analyze products during development, or test finished goods.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Tests and analyzes product at specified stages of the production process per the Quality Control Plan by utilizing relevant laboratory methods and instrumentation.
  • Perform analyses related to:
    • Fermentation monitoring (gravities, yeast cell counts/viability, gas chromatography)
    • Microbiology (sterile sampling, plating, use of differential media, colony identification and characterization, PCR, DNA sequencing)
    • Packaging analysis (TPO, DO, CO2, fill level, can seam, package integrity)
    • Analytical testing (ABV, IBU, SRM, RDF)
  • Participation and assistance with the on-site sensory program
  • Documents and evaluates data to ensure highest Quality product
  • Expediently and appropriately escalates any abnormal or out of specification data
  • Responsible for general housekeeping of laboratory space to maintain a clean and organized work environment
  • Assists management in drawing conclusions and making recommendations
  • Ensures proper documentation is maintained for routine data analysis, inspections, maintenance, etc.
  • Equipment: Responsible for complete maintenance of laboratory equipment including scheduling and executing preventative maintenance, issue troubleshooting, maintaining uptime, calibrations and accuracy checks.
  • Leadership: May be responsible for organizing lower-level Technician duties and workload
  • Method Development: Develops new methods or processes that require a comprehensive knowledge of subject matter and laboratory techniques. Creates new Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and influences Quality Control Plan.
  • Problem Solving: Applies knowledge, creativity, company practices and priorities to obtain solutions to complex problems.
  • Product Development: Possesses and applies subject matter knowledge to lead, plan, and complete projects related to making recommendations to guide product development.
  • Projects: Conceives and plans projects involving the development of new methods to attain objectives. Project work includes full responsibility and ownership for planning, organizing, conducting, and following up on technical projects utilizing a broad range of analyses with major complexity. Coordinates with staff in other departments to initiate investigations and integrate findings and recommendations.
  • Reports: Coordinates with staff in other disciplines to generate reports and integrate findings and recommendations. Implements advanced data analysis methods to generate impactful reports.
  • Subject Matter Expert: Seeks emerging research methods and technologies; maintains state-of-the-art depth and breadth of knowledge in field.
  • Supervision: (Limited) Performs complicated and difficult assignments of considerable complexity under limited direction requiring a high degree of technical and professional competence.
  • Training: May be required to train and provide technical guidance to Technicians as well as staff in other departments on quality process and documentation procedures.
  • Follow SOPs and practice all Brewery Safety Procedures - safely, efficiently, and effectively work to attain department and brewery goals and objectives
  • Other duties if/as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

  • College degree in Science (Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Food Science) or Engineering
  • Working brewing knowledge
  • 2-4 years of QA/QC laboratory experience in an applicable field
  • Works effectively both independently and as a team
  • Is self-motivated and thrives in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • Loves to work hard and have fun!

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification from an accredited institution (IBD, UC Davis, etc.)
  • Advanced degree in related field
  • 5+ years in brewing, food, or fermentation industry

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

  • Ability to work at least 8 hours
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work with long periods of sitting/walking/standing and crouching
  • Will work in an industrial setting with heavy moving machinery, loud noises, textured floors and chemicals
  • Will be exposed to various weather and temperature conditions both indoors and outdoors
