Location: Archuleta Integrated Healthcare

Description of Responsibilities:

  • The purpose of the School Based Mental Health Specialist is to work with a designated school district to identify youth who may be experiencing mental health conditions, support schools with implementing best practices to support youth with mental health conditions and acts as liaison between school and treatment providers. Provide assessment of school practices and makes recommendations based on the School Mental Health Toolkit and the Colorado School Crisis Toolkit. Work collaboratively with school leadership and personnel to identify resources and gaps for supporting youth and develops plans to help meet needs of students. Provide support to teachers and school personnel to increase capacity to understand and support youth with mental health conditions. 

Supervisory responsibilities: No

Physical Demands:

  • Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. Employee is frequently required to walk, sit, stand or kneel and occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop. Must have ability to sit for longer periods at a computer. Employee must be able to travel between AHS locations. Possible potential exposure to communicable disease. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. AHS may make reasonable accommodations to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Required Education and Experience
    • Education: Master’s Degree in Human Services or related field.
    • Minimum Certifications: n/a
    • Degree/Level: Master’s
    • Minimum Experience: Two years experience in human services field
  • Preferred Education and Experience

    • Minimum Certifications: Licensed in the State of Colorado

  • Must be knowledgeable regarding patient health information and HIPAA compliance.
  • Must be organized and demonstrate the ability to follow guidelines.
  • Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to be self-directed.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to follow the organization’s confidentiality and security rules.

Required Skills:

  • A working knowledge of individual, group, family and crisis treatment approaches and their application to clients with emotional, behavioral and substance abuse problems.
  • Ability to summarize service themes from a variety of client contacts and communicate suggested improvements for service delivery.
  • Ability to do mental status exams, data bases and differential diagnoses, service planning, assessment case management and treatment.
  • Working knowledge of school system, resources, supports and limitations in addressing mental health conditions of youth.
  • Ability to assess level of risk and make appropriate clinical judgment for resolution of client emergencies to affect a safe outcome.
  • Ability to deliver services in various community locations.
  • Working knowledge of Colorado Revised Statutes 27-65 (Mental Health Code)
  • Knowledge of community health and mental health resources and their eligibility criteria.
  • Working knowledge of Windows based computer applications to include MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook, and Internet Access.
  • Knowledge and ability to operate standard office equipment including scanner, computer, calculator, copy machine, fax, and multi-line telephone.
  • Ability to be helpful and sensitive to the needs of all employees, while concurrently respecting corporate policies, procedures, and priorities.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships with all internal and external customers.
  • Ability to communicate job-related information to individuals and small groups.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision; plan own work schedule effectively and multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced setting.
  • Ability to concentrate in sometimes hectic and stressful settings.
  • Ability to read and understand written materials.
  • Must regard work as confidential.
  • Must have current driver’s license, qualify for commercial vehicle insurance and maintain a driving record that allows insurability with AHS’ insurance agency.
  • Occasional travel required.
  • Ability to take on additional duties when necessary.

Additional eligibility requirements:

  • Annual Flu immunization
  • Annual TB screening
  • COVID 19 Vaccination or Exemption
  • CPI training with in 90 days
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required within 90 days.
