Job Summary Dental Surgical Assistants work closely with dentists who perform oral surgeries. Primary responsibilities include working closely with patients providing education about pre and post-operative dental care, prepare work stations, assists the oral surgeon in dental procedures, and performs general office duties. Key Responsibilities Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Prepare work station and instruments for the patient and the dentist. Sterilize and arrange instruments, obtain patient’s dental record. Patient preparation – includes escorting patients to the chair, helping the patient feel at ease for their examination and treatment. Taking/developing x-rays. Communicating with the patients on pre and post-op care. During treatment, work alongside the oral surgeon, assisting the dentist in procedures while also ensuring the patient is comfortable. Assist the oral surgeon by preparing topical anesthetics, general anesthesia and IV sedation procedures, keep the treatment area clear by using tools such as suction hoses and hand instruments, and handing the oral surgeon the correct instruments needed during procedures and help observe any problems that may arise. Document treatment by charting in patient records Position Requirements (Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure) Current BLS/CPR certification required. Experience in dental or oral maxillofacial practice is preferred. Compliance with all health & safety regulations and state dental practice requirements. Extensive knowledge of dental terminology, instruments and sterilization methods. Computer proficiency and the ability to learn new programs. Excellent communication and people skills with the ability to quickly build rapport with others. Well-organized, detail oriented and reliable. Graduation from a dental surgical assisting program is a plus. Engage effectively with an ethnically and culturally diverse population. Ability to demonstrate high ethical standards. Additional certification or training is a plus (e.g. X-Ray, CDA, RDA, EFDA or EDDA). Please note this job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive list.
