JOB SUMMARY: Performs evaluation and treatment of adult and pediatric patients with disorders of the visual system with an emphasis on binocular vision and eye movement difficulties. Evaluates vision and ocular alignment (sensory and motor evaluation) using special examination techniques. Performs a variety of duties involved in the testing, interpretation, and treatment of patients with eye problems.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:  Bachelor's degree and completion of a two-year orthoptic fellowship at an accredited program.

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION 

  • Must pass written, oral and practical examination and certified by the American Orthoptic Council.
  • Must be certified within twelve (12) months of hire and maintained by accruing required number of AOC approved continuing education credits.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Conducts strabismus evaluation, infant vision assessment, independent orthoptic treatment (including management of diplopia with Fresnel and spectacle prisms), and independent amblyopia treatment. Data from the evaluation is presented to the ophthalmologist to determine diagnosis and treatment plans for the patient. 2. Coordinates, performs, and interprets pediatric and adult patient screening examinations for physician review including central and peripheral visual field test, ocular motility tests, color vision tests, pharmacological pupil tests, and tonometry, tonography, and tensilon tonography tests. 3. Examines the cornea, lens, and anterior chamber of pediatric patients' eyes using a slit lamp and note variations from normal. 4. Measures acuity of pediatric and adult patients, with and without glasses, for distance and near vision; obtain lensometry measurements to determine lens prescriptions and correct acuity problems; records findings on patient chart. 5. Administers and interprets electrophysiologic tests including to but not limited to electro-retinogram tests, electro-oculogram tests, specular microscopy examination, electrostagmography tests, and VEP examinations. 6. Instructs residents on principles and techniques of pediatric vision assessment and strabismus evaluation. 7. Assists as needed on research projects for the development of new eye examination techniques, procedures, and apparatuses. 8. Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

  • Effective interpersonal skills such as conflict resolution skills, negotiation skills in tense situations, etc.
  • Excellent presentation and public speaking skills.
  • Skill with PC software packages such as word processing, spreadsheet, graphic, and relational database package.
