Job Overview

The ideal candidate will have experience with industrial automation and controls with a focus on PLC/HMI systems, communications architecture, and the ability to integrate multiple machines/equipment from different manufacturers into a desired automation system to increase production deliverables while reducing the high costs of labor. The successful candidate will have experience in food, nutritional or pharmaceuticals manufacturing and be able to apply technology that controls and monitors the production and delivery of the company's products. In this role, you will prepare and implement new equipment, as well as troubleshoot, repair, modify and maintain the existing automation control hardware and software systems. You will support daily operations to ensure the effectiveness and safety of all equipment, processes, personnel, and associated procedures, with the primary objective of improving and streamlining workflow. This person must be capable of collaborating with cross-functional teams and factory managers with a high level of interpersonal, organizational and managerial skills, demonstrating the ability to be an innovator and change agent.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Generate/maintain PLC ladder logic with an emphasis on generating code that is organized, structured, documented, maintainable, and reusable using existing programming standards;
  • Generate/maintain aesthetic HMI screens for machinery that provide sufficient feedback for troubleshooting;
  • Develop an understanding of the production machinery and become the in-house expert on control systems operation and troubleshooting (e.g. PLC, HMI, VFD, servo, etc.);
  • Provide training to lower level engineers and maintenance technicians;
  • Support maintenance and sustaining teams in troubleshooting difficult equipment failures;
  • Create and participate in reviews with Maintenance & Ops to ensure proper implementation and effectiveness of controls and automation features and benefits;
  • Debug and optimize automated processes to maximize cycle time and uptime;
  • Interpret electrical and mechanical design drawings for equipment (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Revit);
  • Research, design, and develop equipment/processes to optimize productivity and workflow;
  • Work with External Sales Engineers to provide input with equipment design and quote preparation as required;
  • Technical writing of User/Operating Manual with Set-up Instructions (SOC), Troubleshooting Guide, Safety Protocol, Spare Parts List with Vendor Part number;
  • Responsible for backing up and maintaining equipment programs and documentation;
  • Assist with equipment/process test plans and execution (FAT, SAT);
  • Work with R&D in test runs and trials when needed;
  • Follow and enforce cGMP guidelines and processes as established in department SOPs;
  • All other duties as assigned and needed to manage engineering and continuous improvement initiatives.

Requirements and Skills

  • BA/BS degree in engineering or related discipline (BSEE degree preferred);
  • 5+ yrs. related experience in lieu of university degree, or 5+ yrs. related experience plus a technical degree/certification will be considered;
  • 3+ years of experience in the food or pharmaceutical industry or with powder processing;
  • Experience with design/drafting tools AutoCAD and/or SolidWorks and/or Revit;
  • Proficient with PLC/HMI devices (e.g. AB, Siemens, Panasonic, Mitsubishi…);
  • Familiar with Industry Standards UL, CE, NEC, ISO;
  • Familiar with Vision Systems (e.g. Cognex, Keyence…);
  • Familiar with various Motion Controllers/Actuators, Servos/VFDs (e.g. AB, Yaskawa, Eaton, Emerson, Siemens…);
  • Experience and skill in configuring, programming, installing, testing and troubleshooting automation control systems;
  • Desired experience with robot programming (e.g. ABB, Fanuc, Kuka…);
  • Must have ability to prioritize, multi-task and meet deadlines; Lead/coordinate projects and tasks and provide timely and detailed project status updates;
  • Familiar with CMMS programs and their use;
  • Knowledge of 5S Systems, GMP and FDA/NSF Regulations;
  • MS Office 2010 (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) and advanced computer literacy;

Work Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.;
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time;
  • Must be able to wear any required PPE such as scrubs, hair net, lab coat, and facemask;
  • Ability to work in an area with moderate powder substances in the air with or without a respirator;
  • Ability to work above shoulders;
  • Other physical requirements include frequent squatting, bending, twisting, and bi-lateral wrist movement;
  • Other physical requirements include moderate standing and occasional squatting, bending, and twisting;
  • Ability to work around a variety of different smells and aromas;
  • Ability to view a computer screen and type for extended hours;
  • Ability to adjust work schedule as business needs require.
