Job Description

Basic Function:

Support geological R&D efforts in petroleum exploration, field development and production as a geochemistry lab technician by:

  1. Operating and maintaining state of art laboratory equipment for geochemistry studies of the subsurface
  2. Performing geochemical, petrographic and spectral analyses of rock/oil samples
  3. Adhering to company safety policies and established laboratory procedures and
  4. Communicating the results to research staff in well documented presentations, tabulations and graphs.

Experience in geochemical assessment and characterization of petroleum systems, rock pyrolysis, maturity estimation, gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy, petrographic and spectral analyses is highly preferred.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for writing and maintaining SOPs (standard operating procedures) for the lab equipment
  • Maintenance and calibration of geochemistry lab equipment, and conduct experiments using various instruments such as Rock Eval, GC-MS, GC, Py-GCMS and EA-GC-IRMS
  • Generate data for geochemical characterization of rock samples for Unconventional and Conventional petroleum systems
  • Assist scientists in reviewing and interpreting analytical data obtained from experiments
  • Documentation of experimental procedures and results
  • Generate and analyze petrographic and spectral data using optical microscopes and hyperspectral scanner
  • Support geochemical experimentation for characterization and assessment of geological CO2 storage potential
  • Prepare comprehensive reports and presentations for scientists and management as required
  • Work with vendors and collaborate with support staff to identify, install and operate new equipment, including documentation of equipment specifications and required laboratory modifications if needed
  • Business travel as needed for conferences, training and external collaborations
  • Observe safety rules, take action on hazards and reports to Unit supervisor
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education and Experience:

  • BS in Geology is preferred. Alternately minimum of four (4) years of college chemistry or equivalent qualification
  • Three (3) + years’ hands-on experience in running and maintaining analytical lab equipment such as Rock Eval, GC-MS, GC and stable isotope analysis
  • Proficiency in rock sample preparation to perform geochemical analysis is highly desired
  • Comprehensive knowledge and professional experience in the application of organic and inorganic geochemical analytical methods
  • Must be able to communicate and comprehend accurately, clearly and concisely in English at a level required to perform the job as outlined; good interpersonal and communication skills; proficient technical writing skills
  • Must possess good work habits, a strong work ethic, and be able to adhere to company work hours, policies, and standard business etiquette
