Job Description

Organization Mission and Vision:

The Appalachian Trail Conservancy’s mission is to protect, manage, and advocate for the Appalachian National Scenic Trail.

Primary Purpose:

The Volunteer Engagement Specialist will advance volunteer engagement on the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) to expand and sustain the volunteer stewardship legacy of the Appalachian Trail. This role will report to the Senior Director, Partnership & Trail Operations and support individual volunteers and A.T. Clubs as partners to the ATC. The Volunteer Engagement Specialist will elevate volunteerism through effective marketing, personal connections, and technical advice to partners the incumbent bolsters A.T. clubs in meeting their grassroots coordination of volunteers in their management of the Trail and its facilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Curate volunteer activities from A.T. Clubs and ATC for central listings on the Volunteer Engagement Platform on ATC’s website by providing technical assistance on listings for maximum impact.
  • Promote available opportunities through volunteer opportunity e-newsletter to interested volunteers, volunteer hubs, partner communication channels, and ATC’s social media platforms.
  • Connect personally with individuals and groups expressing volunteer interest to ensure appropriate engagement.
  • Track and report volunteer engagement and impact from communications and marketing efforts to influence continued improvements.
  • Connect potential new partners with ATC and Clubs to frame shared stewardship activities.
  • Support ATC staff in utilizing the Volunteer Engagement Platform for managing their volunteers.
  • Serve as a subject resource on volunteer recruitment and retention.
  • Support the Partnership, Volunteers, and Trail Operations team with data management updates, saw card processing, online training rotation, and other administrative tasks as assigned.
  • Write and edit material for ATC’s website, The Register Blog, A.T. Journeys, press releases, and social media.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Senior Director, Partnership & Trail Operations and/or the VP of Regional Trail Operations.

Qualifications:

  • Must have excellent persuasive writing skills.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong competence with word processing, spreadsheets, and database management
  • Experience with media relations and public relations.
  • Experience writing for social media and familiarity with social networking sites.
  • Familiarity with the Appalachian Trail and experience with trail work is desirable.
  • Strong collaborative skills working with other internal departments as well as external partners.
  • Being able to work in a fast-paced environment with attention to detail.

Physical Demands:

  • Future frequent travel may be required, primarily on the East Coast.
  • Frequently communicates with individuals by phone, video, email and in person.
  • Working on the phone, video, or computer for prolonged periods.

Additional Details:

  • Schedule: Tuesday – Thursdays (6.5 hours per day)
  • Hourly Pay Rate: $19.25/hr.
  • 403(b) Retirement Plan with up to 7% match after 1 year of service.
  • Location: Hybrid to one of ATC’s offices: Asheville, NC; Roanoke, VA; Harpers Ferry WV, Carlisle, PA.
