The Registered Nurse is to provide competent and quality mental health nursing care to our AHS residents. This position works under the direction of our Medical Director and collaborates with various disciplines to ensure the safety and well-being of our residents.
- Oversees the monitoring of client medical progress while in the program.
- Obtains and records client’s vital signs, height, weight, AIMS testing, and general health status as per AHS policy and procedure or as requested.
- Updates Medical Summaries to reflect changes in medical status.
- Coordinates with direct care staff regarding off-campus medical appointments to ensure that the clients are transported to the appointments and required documentation is sent with and returned by the direct care staff.
- Performs triage, First Aid, and CPR as necessary for client illness, injuries, or emergencies.
- Assists with admission and discharge of clients as needed.
- Administers medications to clients as per Agency policy.
- Maintains appropriate documentation including MAR, medication side effects or adverse reactions, effects of prn medications, and any nursing interventions provided to clients.
- Reports medication errors according to Agency policy.
- Utilizes Laboratory Procedures to track clients who are due for medications. Obtains and processes specimen for laboratory studies as per Agency policy.
- Able to assist staff with therapeutic holds/restrictive interventions as needed based on Restrictive Intervention training.
- Facilitates communication between psychiatrist and direct care staff for approval of implementation of restrictive interventions.
- Completes post-restrictive intervention assessment.
- Completes paperwork necessary for restrictive interventions.
- Assists with Self-Harm Watch orders as per Agency policy.
- Assists with the quality assurance tests on medication administration paperwork and procedures to ensure proper distribution of medication.
- Assists with department orientation and training of new nurses.
- Maintains Medication Disposal Records for discontinued or expired medications as per Agency policy.
- Assists with maintaining client Medicaid and/or insurance information to insure proper payment. Coordinates the appropriate paperwork, insurance information and instructions to guarantee payment for medical services.
- Maintains First Aid kits in the cottages, school and recreation areas.
- Monitors over-the-counter medications in the cottages to ensure that the proper medications are in stock and in date.
- Audits medical portion of medical records as per Medical Services Policy and Procedures.
- Filing of medical paperwork.
- Performs other related duties as required and assigned by supervisor, Medical Director or program leadership.
- Attends quarterly staff meetings for updates in policies and procedures and nursing training.
- Maintains compliance with Agency training requirements.
- Participates in health education of direct care staff and clients.
- Participates in any training sessions deemed necessary for the enhancement of medical services.
- Accomplishes continued education requirements of NC Board of Nursing and Agency policy.
- Completes initial TCI (Therapeutic Crisis Intervention) Training and maintain re-certifications and updates based on AHS Agency policy.
- Instructs Medication Administration training for direct care staff.
- Assists with skills assessment for direct care staff who have completed the medication administration training.
Position Specifications and Education:
A minimum of an associate degree in Nursing is required. Must have a current NC RN license or multi-state RN license and actively working towards becoming a NC licensed RN and be in good standing with the licensing board. Pediatric and/or psychiatric nursing experience preferred. Staff need to be available to work flexible 12-hour shifts (6am-6pm and 6pm-6am) and weekends as needed. Position requires all staff to be at least 23 years of age to work in the program with client populations ages 12 - 17. For PRN/Part-Time Registered Nurse position - must be able to work at least two (2) shifts a month and one (1) holiday per calendar year.

Physical Requirements: Will frequently perform a wide variety of physical tasks such as standing, walking, running, stooping, bending, climbing stairs, which requires strength, coordination, endurance, and agility. Staff must be agile enough to control and rapidly extricate him/herself and youths from buildings in case of an emergency. Persons with any medical problems such as joint problems, obesity, arthritis or cardiopulmonary conditions, where it would be unwise or not possible to engage in moderate physical exertion should not be considered. This program does require staff to be able to maintain sufficient physical agility and stamina to intervene with uncooperative youths and must be able to exert the minimum necessary strength to restrain and subdue the youth if necessary. Staff must be capable of following a distance as required in the prevention of a youth absconding.
A valid driver’s license in the state of permanent residence and clean driving record are required. All potential job candidates must pass a drug screening test and an extensive background check.
