 In 1930, boyhood friends Iver Erickson and William “Andy” Anderson turned their shared dairy knowledge into one business.  From those humble beginnings, AE has grown into one of the largest independent dairies in the country.  Today, AE is still owned and operated by second- and third-generation Erickson family members.  A lot has changed since 1930, but AE has kept its commitment to quality and plans to continue that commitment well into the future.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The primary goal of our distribution team is to support and grow our customer base by providing a professional, timely, accurate, customer-focused, safe product delivery system, while maintaining the optimum product control standards.

This position leads/directs and enables the distribution management team to carry out all distribution routing and connected department daily functions, while adhering to all company, Federal Department of Transportation and union guidelines to ensure safe and timely distribution of dairy products to our customers, while managing to achieve maximum efficiency of the department.  

This position leader consults with fleet, safety, operations, cooler, quality assurance and sales leaders to ensure smooth and efficient flow of product across departments and ultimately to our customers. The position proactively addresses any delivery obstacles such as production delays, shortages, cooler load-out delays, as well as distribution variables such as weather, employee and equipment related issues.

The Director of Distribution listens and responds to the needs of our customers, sales team and employees to organize and execute the most desirable routing and distribution system to ultimately provide the highest level of service upholding our brand promise of Ridiculously High Standards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following are fundamental duties that an individual who holds the position must perform. This is not an exhaustive list. Other duties, in addition to essential job functions, will be assigned at the discretion of the CEO/President.

  1. Directs daily activities of department resources to ensure accurate and on-time deliveries to customers. This includes loading schedules, adds and shortages on trailers, departure schedules, transportation routes and consultation with Cooler Manager regarding warehouse inventories.
  2. Manage and improve department performance through establishing and maintaining clear expectations for supervisors and employees.
  3. Train and coach supervisors and employees to achieve required results with regard to safety, quality, productivity and attendance.
  4. Drive company programs to create and promote an environment where employees are involved, empowered, and committed to the success of the distribution team.
  5. Resolve employee issues, maintenance items, product quality and other issues.
  6. Ensures that loads are booked and timely delivered to our customers as scheduled.
  7. Assign routes to driver staff including assigning relief drivers to open routes or routes in training.
  8. Ensure records of attendance, on time to work and completion of routes in scheduled time are maintained and current.
  9. Communicate with customer service or directly to customers any deliveries that are missed, or cannot be completed due to weather, traffic issues, customer location being closed or driver error.
  10. Assist customer service with the dispatching of call-in shipments to the correct route drivers.
  11. Consults with the sales and operations teams to proactively and efficiently solve and minimize any service interruptions for customers
  12. Communicate with all plant, fleet, cooler, corporate departments and levels of administration to facilitate a seamless daily operation with proper products being shipped on time to customers.
  13. Communicate with Kansas City and all satellite operations on the following: load sets, trailer returns, special orders, adds and shortages, issues affecting arrival or departure schedules, manifests and mail bags.
  14. Communicate with wholesale transports on the following: sanitation, manifests, proper load set up, shortages, complaints, checking, hand-held computers, end of day paper work and invoices.
  15. Communicate with union and non-union employees to facilitate company policy and ensure safe and timely deliveries to our customers.
  16. Assist with department hiring and terminations as required.
  17. Actively promote customer service and personally adhere to those principles.
  18. Management of company policies and procedures.
  19. Compliance with state and federal guidelines.
  20. Responsible for the food safety and the food quality of all products manufactured at the facility.

 QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

1.                 Self-motivated with ability to prioritize job duties and meet deadlines.

2.                 Working knowledge of personal computer systems. (Microsoft Office and AS400)

3.                 Problem solving experience using process improvement techniques and policy compliance.

4.                 Excellent interpersonal skills.

5.                 Commitment to quality workmanship, cleanliness of products, facility and employee well-being.

6.                 Strong verbal communication and ability to write clearly and grammatically correct.

7.                 Detail oriented with strong organizational skills, and ability to delegate responsibilities.

8.                 Ability to perform mathematical computations.

9.                 Ability to persuade and motivate others.

10.             Ability to resolve people-related problems and be courteous in difficult situations.

11.             Ability to tolerate long hours in a standing position.

12.             Ability to speak, hear, and see, and to transport self within building.

13.             Able to use equipment normal to job junctions, including computer. (forklift and hand-held computer)

 EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

1.      High school diploma required.  Bachelor’s degree in transportation, business, and equivalent work experience a plus.

2.      Four years previous supervisory experience in transportation and logistics operations preferred

3.      The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of supervisor leadership skills within a Union environment.

PREREQUISITES:

  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical, drug screen, and background check with an acceptance of a conditional employment offer.
