Job Summary: As a Precision Cleaning Technician, you will be working for the client’s Mechanical Fabrication and Test Section, which maintains technical support facilities and resources that provide the services required to fabricate, assemble, and test electro-mechanical developmental and flight hardware. This section develops and matures equipment and technologies that enable and enhance our fabrication and environmental testing capabilities for current and future missions.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for supporting engineers and technicians on the assembly and test of flight spacecraft.
  • Support the Propulsion and Fluid Systems Services Group with performing cleaning procedures in the Precision Cleaning Facility (PCF), as well as being able to perform, when necessary, pressure system fabrication, test, and certification.
  • Conducting and documenting activities on a variety of technical tasks such as precision cleaning and cleanliness verification, assembly, disassembly, fabrication, test, calibration, measurement, maintenance, repair, and modification of electronic, mechanical, chemical, optical, and electromechanical systems (including the prototype, engineering model and flight), cabling and components, ground support equipment, specialized test equipment, modification, maintenance and certification of laboratory facilities and equipment.
  • Ensure that the process, product, and environment comply with Laboratory protocols, government regulations, and professional standards.

Required Skills:

  • Typically requires a High School diploma with a minimum of 6 years of related experience; related required training.
  • Working knowledge of pressure system assembly and test.
  • Experience with performing Precision Cleaning methods, including nitric acid passivation, Brulin detergent cleaning, Oakite detergent cleaning, Vertrel cleaning, and ultrasonic cleaning methods.
  • Experience with performing Non-Volatile Residue (NVR) verification of hardware cleanliness and an understanding of Particle Count Level (PCL) verification processes; Ability to maintain hardware cleanliness after cleaning by following specific stringent handling techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Understanding of applicable policies, procedures, and practices in handling Flight Hardware.
  • Ability to work overtime (OT) hours, as required, and travel to work in distant locations, domestic and/or international, as needed.

Desired Skills:

  • Airframe and Power Plant Certification
  • Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity, are necessary to work with miniaturized systems or components.
  • Understanding and experience in the following areas: Layout, fabrication, and test of mechanical components and assemblies used in space flight. Electro-Mechanical Assembly, with a strong emphasis on mechanical assembly skills; Installation, alignment, and testing of prototype electromechanical systems; Safe handling of delicate components.
  • Experience in fluid/pressure system fabrication and testing.
  • Experience working in an ISO 6 or higher cleanroom environment.
  • Experience with the use of all hand tools, tube bending and flaring, and some machining experience (mill, lathe, drill press, band saw, grinder) helpful.
  • Must take ownership of given assignments, and be accountable for the team’s actions.
  • Knowledge of computer applications (e.g., spreadsheets, databases, word processing, web searches) for maintaining component information and/or inventory.
