The Department of Computer Science of the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites applications for a term faculty appointment for Academic Year 2019-2020. Rank will be dependent on experience and stature in the field. The appointment is a 9-month position and will commence on August 26, 2019. The position is potentially renewable.
Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in Computer Science or related field. Highly qualified applicants with a master’s degree in Computer Science or related field will be considered. The ideal candidate will be an inspiring teacher with demonstrated excellence in entry-level Computer Science courses. The successful candidate will be expected to teach five sections (2 fall semester, 3 spring semester) of our Introduction to Computer Science course (a Python-based course that serves as an introduction to the computer science major) or alternatively, four sections (2 fall semester, 2 spring semester) of the introductory course and another course of his or her interest available in the department. The teaching assignment also includes coordinating activities related to this introductory course including coordinating the material taught across sections by different instructors and managing teaching assistants. All faculty are expected to hold office hours and participate in School and University activities and service.
The Computer Science Department offers both a BS and a MS in computer science. The undergraduate major has been experiencing rapid growth. As of Spring 2019, the department had 108 students registered as majors and 28 as minors. Learn more about the department at https://www.american.edu/cas/cs/.
