OVERVIEW

This position provides support for the Government Affairs and Health Policy Departments. Responsible for assisting with project tasks, policy analysis and advocacy, political fundraising, establishing and maintaining operational systems, and developing reports.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

CROSS-FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the Legislative Advocacy Committee, PlastyPAC Board of Governors, Health Policy Committee, CPT/RUC Committee and the ASPS Plastic Surgery Caucus:
    • Provide specified project-based support to staff liaison on committee-led projects and initiatives
    • Lead the scheduling of and communication regarding meetings and calls
  • Create and enhance systems for member communication, key contact identification, managing and analyzing data, for performance metrics, for cataloguing and managing information across the Advocacy, Coding, and Health Policy functions
  • Coordinate the review by ASPS leaders and submission of ASPS comment letters and external sign-on requests

ADVOCACY AND GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop all ASPS grassroots campaigns through the ASPS Advocacy in Action site
  • Produce analyses and reference tools to support advocacy
  • Serve as lead staff for the ASPS delegation to the AMA House of Delegates
    • Manage the event preparation
      • Coordinate with AMA and event venue staff on meeting space and F&B needs
      • Coordinate with AMA staff to ensure the Plastic Surgery Caucus (PSC) members are appropriately credentialed
      • Communicate AMA event updates to PSC members
      • Communicate registration, travel, hotel, and meeting agenda information to PSC members
      • Coordinate the PSC’s interview schedule with candidates running in AMA elections
    • Manage preparation of background materials for the Plastic Surgery Caucus participation at AMA HOD meetings
      • Bring in ASPS government affairs staff to review HoD resolutions, build the Plastic Surgery Caucus Policy Tracker, and maintain the Policy Tracker throughout the course of HoD meetings
    • Manage on-site execution at HoD meetings
    • Partner with Caucus leadership to craft letters of support for Council/Caucs candidates for Committees/Council openings
  • ASPS’s Political Action Committee, PlastyPAC
    • Maintain ASPS political candidate assessment materials
    • Track and report on PAC events involving ASPS staff or members
    • Execute the PlastyPAC Member Benefits Program as needed
    • Manage the disbursement of PlastyPAC contributions to political candidates
  • ASPS Advocacy Summit/Regional Fly-Ins
    • Manage attendee registration and attendee communication
    • Lead the communication with vendors utilized for executing aspects of the events
    • Coordinate with the ASPS Meetings team to manage the F&B and A/V specifications for the event, ensuring adherence to budget and adequate resourcing of planned event sessions
    • Update legislator biographies for all Members of Congress with whom ASPS physicians meet
  • Reporting
    • Support the Director in producing regular quantitative and qualitative analyses of Government Affairs activities

HEALTH POLICY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Produce analyses and organize information to support health policy product development
  • Coding and Reimbursement Support
    • Incorporate edits to the ASPS Coding Guidebook and the changes to the program for the ASPS Coding Workshops
    • Aid in the administration of RUC physician surveys when they are required

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in a related field required.

Experience: Candidates entering the workforce for the first time and possessing degrees in political science, health policy, or related fields will be considered with minimal or internship-only related experience. Candidates with 1-2 years’ direct experience in any or all of the following will be strongly considered:

  • Working in a policy position for an elected official
  • Lobbying at the state or federal level;
  • Monitoring state/federal legislative and regulatory issues;
  • Developing advocacy programs with state, local or specialty organizations;
  • Health/medical association management, health care delivery, and/or third-party reimbursement

Candidates must possess and demonstrate:

  • Excellent work ethic and superb organizational skills
  • Knowledge of state and federal legislative and regulatory processes.
  • Strong policy research and writing skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and political skills.
  • Computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office, Access, Oracle, and Internet technology.
