Job Description

Nature of the Position: Manages marketing strategies and programs for ASLAs revenue-generating products, events, and services consistent with the Societys overall Strategic Plan. This includes focusing on the organization, supporting members, vendors, monitoring market-share, manages application of the ASLA brand in marketing deliverables, communicating internally, effectively managing a budget and planning and executing strategies.

The portfolio includes but is not limited to: Membership (Individual and Corporate), the Conference on Landscape Architecture, Landscape Architecture Magazine, and related ASLA sites.

Responsibilities:

  • Works in collaboration with the Managing Director, key staff, and vendors to develop and implement annual, integrated marketing plans. Manages the marketing budget and assists director and CFO in developing budget projections.
  • Works in collaboration with the Managing Director to secure sponsors for key Communications & Marketing programs such as Awards & Honors.
  • Assists Managing Director in reviewing statistical evidence to determine key metrics and benchmarks for measuring success, setting near and long-term growth targets.
  • Provides counsel and direction on policy and priority setting for marketing and promotion programs.
  • Executes systematic project management to achieve program goals, meet or exceed revenue targets, and ensure on-time completion of all marketing and membership campaigns. Drafts, edits, and deploys marketing campaigns, inclusive of direct mail and electronic membership drives.
  • In collaboration with the department director, responsible for marketing and promotion operating plans and budgets, and for setting short- and long-term goals.
  • Leads development and management of all assets for the annual Conference on Landscape Architecture, including but not limited to conference website, mobile app, member electronics communications (email messages), and printed materials as needed, and always adhering to brand guidelines.
  • Edits and produces the content for the primary newsletter for members, LAND, ASLAs bi-weekly digital and email-based member newsletter, focusing on promoting ASLA products, services, and opportunities to engage ASLA; latest news on key ASLA initiatives; partner news; and aggregating landscape architecture media stories. Manage content and image editing, copy editing, CMS production, email testing and delivery.
  • Supports Director of Membership in the development of member and market research, leveraging available data to identify trends and determine customer satisfaction and needs.
  • Manages production of both print and digital marketing and promotional materials, including brochures, ads, solicitations, and web sites; sources and manages vendors, and ensures adherence to brand guidelines.
  • Researches and initiates co-marketing exchanges with allied organizations to support product portfolio, coordinates placements of ad trades and house ads.
  • Manages ASLAs Google Adwords Grant, including creating and updating Adwords campaigns to market ASLA Conferences, products, services, and major initiatives.
  • Collaborates with Senior Manager of Meetings & Special Programs and Managing Director in the planning and implementation of ASLA participation in allied organizations' trade shows, meetings, and programs (travel to shows required). Determines appropriate products, services and assets for promotion at events.
  • Collaborates with Managing Director in the development of new strategies to increase magazine circulation, advertising, exhibit and sponsorship sales and event registration.
  • Works in partnership with Managing Director and other ASLA staff and volunteers to advance the Societys mission, strategic objectives, and priority issues.
  • Upholds the ASLA values and culture.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Print
  • Uses advanced knowledge of typography, layout, illustration, and other graphic design skills to develop a range of advertisements, briefs, pamphlets, button, and other collateral materials in support of specific initiatives.
  • Serves as the graphic designer for various assets (ads, images, icons, logos, etc.) and documents.
  • Works with internal clients (membership, advocacy, professional practice, education, and development teams) on the design and development of print collateral that reflects the ASLA brand such as ASLA event invitations.
  • Manages various contracts/vendors related to print production and web development; coordinates with Senior Production Manager and outside vendors for print production.
Preferred Background/Experience
  • BA degree; graduate degree a plus.
  • Minimum five years experience in marketing and program promotion; experience in marketing with trade associations/nonprofit and membership-driven organizations a plus.
  • Comprehensive understanding of web and social media analytics.
  • Experience with campaign management, segmentation, data-variable membership drives, and list acquisition and management; in-depth knowledge of marketing and promotion strategy and techniques.
  • Proficiency in verbal, written, and interpersonal communication. Excellent organizational skills, good judgment, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to balance heavy workload with short- and long-term project deadlines, address changing priorities, and work well under pressure.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, etc.) applications required. Working knowledge of HTML. Experience with content management systems for web site design and development, including .NET-based CMS, Wordpress as well as CRMs (e.g. Hubspot). Experience managing Google Adwords accounts.
  • Exemplary project management skills; exceptional writing and editing capabilities; strong relationship-building skills; ability to confidently engage/inspire internal and external stakeholders at all levels; ability to anticipate and resolve problems; knowledge of design, planning, and/or environmental issues a plus.
This position is based in Washington, D.C., with a hybrid option. A set in-office schedule of two days a week is a requirement.
