Job Description

The American Optometric Association is currently seeking an Associate Director for Regulatory Policy!

The American Optometric Association (AOA) Advocacy team is a tight-knit group of seasoned advocates housed in the association's satellite office located in Old Town Alexandria. Our passionate in-house lobbyists, payer experts, and regulatory policy leaders are fully supported by a network of dedicated volunteer leaders. The Coding and Regulatory Policy team ensures doctors of optometry’s voice is heard in the development of each and every regulation that could impact doctors of optometry and their patients.

Purpose
The Associate Director, Regulatory Policy plays a key leadership role in the Coding and Regulatory Policy team. This position works to expand access to care in support of doctors of optometry and the patients they serve by ensuring strong engagement between federal agencies and AOA. The Associate Director will oversee the development, coordination, and implementation of strategy for various programs and activities. This position also identifies and supports programs related to specialty areas of focus such as public health, contact lenses, and sports performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develops strategy and leads efforts and for federal agency engagement, comment letters, and materials that assist members with participation in new payment models, regulatory compliance related to quality reporting, and optimizing reimbursement for services.
  • Identifies unique public health opportunities and partnerships for the association.
  • Supports CPT/RUC activities.
  • Monitors and analyzes regulatory issues by reviewing Federal Register announcements, federal proposed and final rules, related list serves, attending meetings, conferences, member inquiries, and other activities.
  • Creates materials and tools to expand the knowledge base for members related to payment models and quality reporting programs.
  • Contributes to the success of the AOA advocacy programs by initiating proposals and developing solutions to health policy challenges facing doctors of optometry.
  • Collaborates with the non-governmental agencies and other health care organizations to achieve common goals and leverage resources.
  • Assists in discussions related to CPT/RUC issues, track relevant deadlines, and attend CPT Editorial Panel and RUC meetings, as assigned.
  • Supports AOA advocacy committees.

Our Ideal Candidate

  • Bachelor's degree in political science, communications, English, public policy, or related field preferred.
  • 3-5 years of quality improvement and health care policy experience, knowledge of health policy issues, and regulatory policy processes.
  • Knowledge of the regulatory process.
  • Experience in government agency engagement and/or project management.
  • Proven experience in committee or stakeholder engagement and oversight.
  • Experience in an association setting is strongly preferred.
  • Highly organized, results-oriented, and committed to high-touch customer service.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Passion for the mission of AOA.

Travel Requirements
This position requires some travel, up to 10% (4-5 trips per year).
