Accounting Manager

AFSPA is seeking a Manager, Accounting to join our team. The ideal candidate is responsible for all areas relating to financial reporting. This position will be responsible for developing and maintaining accounting principles, practices and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements. The Manager, Accounting supervises four staff and is responsible for managing the team to ensure that work is properly allocated and completed in a timely and accurate manner. This position addresses tight deadlines and a multitude of accounting activities including general ledger preparation, financial reporting, government contract reporting, yearend audit preparation and the support of budget and forecast activities. The Accounting Manager will have contact with senior-level management which requires strong interpersonal communication skills both written and verbal. Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned

  1. Obtain and maintain a thorough understanding of the financial reporting and general ledger structure.

  2. Manage day to day accounting operations and ensure that there is a redundant process backup in place for every critical operation

  3. Manage the accuracy and productivity of day-to-day activities of accounts payable, cash disbursements, cash receipts, general ledger journal entries, travel and expense reporting, biweekly payroll processing, revenue recognition, fixed asset records, and cost accounting.

  4. Advises staff regarding the handling of non-routine reporting transactions.

  5. Ensure an accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and year end close.

  6. Ensure the timely reporting of all monthly financial information.

  7. Create new internal accounting corporate policies and maintain existing polices.

  8. Assist in the daily banking requirements.

  9. Ensure the accurate and timely processing of multi-line insurance program transactions.

  10. Ensure the monthly and quarterly bank compliance activities are performed in a timely and accurate manner.

  11. Supports budget and forecasting activities.

  12. Collaborates with the other department managers to support overall Association goals and objectives.

  13. Monitors and analyzes department work to develop more efficient procedures and use of resources while maintaining a high level of accuracy.

  14. Responds to inquiries from the Senior Director of Finance & Accounting and Association wide managers regarding financial results, special reporting requests and the like.

  15. Work with the Senior Director, Finance & Accounting to ensure a clean and timely year end audit.

  16. Assist in development and implementation of new procedures and features to enhance the workflow of the department.

  17. Provide training to new and existing staff as needed.

  18. Handle personnel issues relating to staff conflicts, absenteeism, performance issues, etc.

  19. Work with each direct report to establish training and professional development goals for staff.

  20. Support Senior Director, Finance & Accounting with special projects and workflow process improvements.



  • B.S. in Accounting
  • 8 years accounting experience
  • 3 years supervisory experience.


  • Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designation.
  • Knowledge and application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and FAR, FTR, (FEHBAR preferred)
  • Advanced computer skills with MS Office, accounting software (Solomon preferred) and databases
  • Proven accounting operations experience (government contracting/non-profit preferred).

Compensation for this position is in $73k to range to $83k range depending on qualifications and experience.
