Rangeland and Botany Technician

Summary: American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the Caribou-Targhee National Forest, is seeking two Rangeland and Botany Technicians.

The member will serve as an advanced trainee performing work designed to prepare the incumbent for professional work assignments related to the treatment, monitoring, assessment and maintenance aspects of noxious weed treatment. This opportunity is intended for enthusiastic professionals, with a deep interest in advancing their career goals in natural resource management and conservation.

Location: Palisades Ranger District, Driggs, ID or Dubois Ranger District, Dubois, ID

The Palisades Ranger District encompasses about 450,000 acres in southeastern Idaho and western Wyoming. The District stretches from the Big Hole Mountains at the north end, along the Idaho -Wyoming state line on the east, to McCoy Creek on the south. The District has about 24 permanent employees and several seasonal employees. The world famous fly fishing stream, South Fork of the Snake River is located within the District, as well as very diverse wildlife populations, spectacular scenery, and a variety of resource programs and challenges.

The Dubois Ranger District on the Caribou-Targhee National Forest offers over 460,000 acres of opportunity to experience the great outdoors. Diamond Peak, the third highest point in Idaho, towers above the landscape at 12,197 feet.

Position Overview
  • Identify noxious weed species present in the Palisades Ranger District
  • Treat noxious weeds on the Palisades District using integrated pest management techniques
  • Accurately measures and mix herbicides and adjuvants into spray tanks
  • Maintain accurate records of weed treatments
  • Operate various spray equipment
  • Utilize hand tools such as shovels, pulaskis, and hoes
  • Operate OHV's daily
  • Maintain spray equipment
  • Other duties to assist the Range/weed treatment program as assigned

Position Benefits

Living Allowance: The member should anticipate serving 40 hrs/wk, with potential to work holidays and weekends. The Member will receive a living allowance of $720/wk for food and incidentals, dispersed bi-weekly.

Housing: Housing is available, provided by the USFS in a shared bunkhouse setting (optional)

Training Provided: UTV operation and trailer pulling training will be provided by the USFS. The Forest Service will strive to provide the member with opportunities to shadow conservation professionals to learn about botanical disciplines.

Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a federal hiring authority upon completion of their term of service.   • Personal reliable transportation is required as the duty station is considered remote.
  • Members must a high fitness level and an interest in vegetation treatments
  • Ability to work alone/in a small group with minimal supervision in remote settings.
  • Able to take initiative, work independently, and participate in collaborative efforts.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with resource professionals and the public
  • The applicant must be able to work in the outdoors using and transporting a variety of spraying equipment and hand tools.
  • The member must be willing to represent ACE and the USFS in a professional, positive and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Proven ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group
  • Proficient in English
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request)
  • Ability to pass a federal criminal background check

Preferred Skills:
  • Experience driving 4x4 and/or all-wheel drive vehicles safely in off-road conditions
  • Experience pulling trailers on Forest roads
  • Equipment maintenance experience to maintain sprayers and OHVs
  • Experience hiking over remote, steep, and rocky terrain in adverse weather conditions (cold/hot temps, light rain, etc.)
  • Ability to navigate in remote areas using GPS, mobile devices as well as map and compass
  • Basic understanding of noxious weed management practices
