The American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) is an organization composed of biochemical, clinical, cytogenetic, and molecular geneticists, genetic counselors and other health care professionals committed to the practice of medical genetics. The ACMG was incorporated in 1991 to give national representation to providers of genetic services and their patients with genetic disorders, and to speak for the emerging specialty of medical genetics in organizations and agencies concerned with medical service, certification, and regulatory issues. The ACMG provides education, resources, and a voice for the medical genetics profession and its mission is to improve health through genetics.  The educational and public health programs of the ACMG are dependent upon charitable gifts from corporations, foundations, and individuals through the ACMG Foundation for Genetic and Genomic Medicine.

The ACMG Foundation for Genetic and Genomic Medicine (ACMGF), is a community of supporters and contributors who understand the importance of medical genetics and genomics in healthcare.  Established as a nonprofit organization in 1992, the ACMGF supports the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics mission to “translate genes into health." In addition, ACMGF works to foster charitable giving, promote training opportunities to attract future medical geneticists and genetic counselors, share information about medical genetics, sponsor important research and much more.

Job Description


The Chief Executive Officer is responsible for the daily conduct of the affairs of the ACMG and the Foundation, including: matters involving personnel and office management; administrative and legal procedures; budget and fiscal management; business management of Genetics in Medicine; management of the Annual Clinical Genetics Meeting, the Genetics and Genomics Review Course, and such other meetings as shall be deemed appropriate; management of Continuing Medical Education programs; and membership development.  The Chief Executive Officer participates in formulation of short and long-range policies, mission statements, and goals and objectives of ACMG/ACMGF; implements policies and programs developed by the Boards; provides support for membership and committees (ACMG); and represents the organizations externally, including public relations with other colleges and societies, academia, industry, and federal entities.


  • ACMG:  Develops, proposes and, upon Board approval, supervises effective programs and services for the membership, including print and electronic (web) publications, professional recognition and development, education, conferences, governmental relations
  • Establishes organizational structure and administrative policies and procedures for staff and oversees implementation through the Chief Operations Officer
  • ACMG:  As business manager of Genetics in Medicine, maintains a close working relationship with the Editor-in-Chief and the publisher to assure overall goals of the journal
  • ACMG:  Develops a business plan for ACMG for Board review and approval that is consistent with the strategic planning efforts of the College
  • As fiscal officer of the ACMG and the Foundation, prepares and recommends an annual budget to the Boards for approval (through the Finance Committee for the ACMG) and has the authority to sign checks and contracts.  Has an active role in the financial controls systems within ACMG and ACMGF. Assists the Boards of both organizations in raising funds for various activities.  Develops overall fund-raising strategies in consultation with the Treasurers and the Boards and implements with approval of the Board(s). 
  • Ensures that all requirements of grants, cooperative agreements and contracts are fulfilled
  • Assures the legal integrity of the ACMG and the Foundation and assures adequate insurance for operations and personnel.  Seeks legal and financial advice when appropriate
  • ACMG: Assures CME program is conducted in compliance with the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) standards
  • ACMGF:  Establishes short-term and long-range fundraising goals that support educational, training, and professional initiatives of ACMG
  • ACMGF: Ensures a sustainable asset base by building long-term relationships with key donors and fund holders based on mission, cultivation, stewardship, and sound fiscal management and ensures the annual and on-going integrity of donor intent and stewardship
  • ACMGF: Oversees all fund development and fund-raising activities including grant writing, cultivation and stewardship of donors, event planning, and identifying new sources of donors
  • ACMGF: Ensures the assets of the Foundation are invested optimally, efficiently and in accordance with the guidelines and policies. Oversees the preparation of investment reports for the Committee and the Board of Directors.
  • Assures staff support for activities of the Boards, committees, and special projects within organizational capacity
  • Serves as principal spokesperson on administrative and program matters and on policy matters as defined by the Boards
  • Evaluates quality and impact of ongoing programs
  • Implements decisions of the Boards and committees
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Sits as ex officio (non-voting) member of the Boards and all committees
  • Serves as liaison to other professional and academic organizations
  • Maintains personal contact with elected officers, committee chairs and members, and others to maximally facilitate program development and implementation
  • Maintains relationships with federal, public, private and industry supported organizations to serve the best interests of the ACMG and the Foundation in conformity with overall objectives and policies

Supervision, Guidance, Reporting

  • Is appointed by, reports to, and serves at the pleasure of the Board of Directors of the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics in concurrence with the Board of Directors of the ACMG Foundation for Genetic and Genomic Medicine
  • Performs under the general policies and guidance established by the Bylaws and the Articles of Incorporation of the ACMG and the Foundation
  • Works with the Presidents on a regular basis and reports in person on conference calls of the Board and in writing at each in-person meeting of the Boards of Directors
  • Administers the daily affairs of the organizations, including assignment of specific tasks to staff.  Determines the amount of time that each employee shall devote to the ACMG and to the Foundation
  • When matters of concern arise, discusses them with the President(s), Executive Committee(s), and/or Treasurer(s) prior to decisions


  • Doctoral degree - Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) with certification by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics and a minimum of ten (10) years of experience in clinical genetics or genetic research is required.


  • Master’s Degree - Masters in Public Health (MPH), Masters in Business Administration (MBA) or Masters in Public Administration (MPA) with a minimum of ten (10) years of experience in Association management and CAE certification is required.

 Knowledge, Skills and Competencies:

  • In addition to a scientific and/or administrative background, the Chief Executive Officer has a background of maturity and proven professional competence in the areas related to the objectives of the College and the Foundation.  The nature of the programs, the personal contacts, and many of the substantive duties of the organizations require application of a broad scientific/health or administrative background
  • Ability to develop and administer complex organizational relationships among staff, parent organization, membership and others
  • Ability to build liaisons and coalitions with federal, public, private and industry-supported organizations for the purpose of developing an effective advocacy for medical genetics and related research and for the public policy priorities of the College and the Foundation
  • Knowledge, skills and abilities appropriate to operation and management, personnel and manpower utilization, and communication issues that are relevant to establishing a well-managed administration to advance the overall influence of the College and the Foundation
  • Must possess outstanding interpersonal skills for productive interactions with the Boards to assure implementation of the goals of the College and the Foundation

Additional Information


This is a largely sedentary position that requires the ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. The selected candidate must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations with the ability to observe details at a close range (within a few feet of the observer) and lift small objects up to 20 lbs. across the office for various needs.
