Job Title: Behavioral Specialist Department: Veterinary Services Reports to: Attending Veterinarian JOB SUMMARY: Performs tasks relating to the implementation and maintenance of the environmental enrichment and breeding programs for nonhuman primates such as Rhesus macaques, Cynomologus macaques, African greens, and marmosets. Responsible for implementing social introductions, positive reinforcement training, inanimate enrichment techniques, conducts behavioral assessments and interventions as necessary, and documents program activities. Collects behavioral data for research projects and program assessments. Assists in colony management duties by monitoring production, morbidity and mortality, animal census, selection of NHPs for research assignment, project housing needs, assisting in NHP acquisitions and sales, planning and forecasting resource needs for the production colonies. Assists Animal Husbandry Manager and veterinary staff as directed. May assist Research Study Director as needed with data collection and enrichment programs. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Behaviorist must be able to perform the following tasks with minimum supervision: · Behavioral observation · Keep records of various tasks performed · Follow Standard Operating Procedures of the facility · Prepare, clean and give out enrichment items when needed · Receive weekly enrichment food orders and determine need for changes in order · Optimize breeding groups by assisting in identification and establishment of successful breeders and retire non-breeders · Maintain and update infant database by working with a team to tag new infants, identify DAMs and enter data into the database by submitting status changes the same day infants are tagged · Manage infant observation data collection and work with veterinary technicians to maintain data collection · Identify and establish appropriate social partners · Must be available to work weekends and holidays when needed · Must be team oriented, and willing to work across institutional divisions in a professional and courteous manner · Performs other duties as assigned. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Occasional supervision of 8-12 Processing/Enrichment Technicians. Works to encourage teamwork and group coordination at the primate centers as related to job duties. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: · Must have a working understanding of principles of animal breeding, genetics and behavior of one or more relevant species. · Good organizational and communication skills · Computer skills are a must. Experience with relational databases, spreadsheets and e-mail · Ability to work in a team environment · Ability to work unsupervised EDUCATION: Must have a BA/BS degree in a behavioral or biological science CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: LATG certification preferred, if not possessed must obtain within first year of employment South Carolina Driver’s License or equivalent LANGUAGE SKILLS: Must be able to read and write, and interpret documents including task descriptions, standard operating procedures, and other instructions. REASONING ABILITY: Able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Additionally, the employee must be able to distinguish colors.
