Medical Assistant / Licensed Practical Nurse

 

POSITION: Medical Assistant/ Licensed Practical Nurse

 

RESPONSIBLE TO: Surgeon and Manager

 

POSITION SUMMARY: Prepares patients to see the surgeon, facilitates lab tests and pre-operative counseling as needed, and assists with clinical and administrative duties as directed. With a customer service orientation, answer the telephone, prepare the office for the day, schedule patient appointments.

 

 

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

· High school degree required

· Completion of Medical Assisting program required or Licensed Practical Nurse

· CMA or LPN certificate required

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

· Good spelling / Type 40 WPM

· Experience with an Electronic Health Record, preferred

· Comfortable using email and interacting with Internet applications

· Working knowledge of insurance preferred

· Pleasant speaking voice and demeanor / Excellent communication skills

· Neat, professional appearance

· Three to five years of work experience, with increased responsibility, in a surgical practice, customer service, hospitality, or travel industry preferred

· Experience with practice management software and word processing applications

· A “can-do” attitude, shows initiative and willingness to adopt to change

· Excellent written and oral communication skills

· Able to understand patient concerns and handle them appropriately

· Proven ability to handle upscale clientele

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

· Greets patients and escorts them from the waiting room to exam rooms; prepares patients for consultation, post-op and follow-up

· Takes vital signs for post-op and follow-up patients, review and document health history as needed

· Assists surgeon in preparing for examinations and minor procedures

· Accompanies surgeon during examination if a chaperone is required

· Assists in suture removal, drain removal, and other clinical activities as directed by the surgeon

· Draws or prepares injectable drugs

· Prepares and maintains supplies and equipment for treatments, including sterilization

· Disposes of contaminated items according to OSHA guidelines

· Performs patient education when appropriate

· Replenishes supplies—stocks and cleans exam rooms

· Takes medical stock inventory and communicates supply shortages to manager

· May take photographs according to protocol

· Completes all logs

· Takes messages from patients with clinical questions and returns messages, under the supervision of the physician

· Appropriately discusses cosmetic consultations, cosmetic procedures and skin care services with prospective patients over the phone—encourages them to schedule an appointment
