Summary

 Alarm.com is seeking a hardworking, highly motivated and experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer who will utilize CAD and FEA software to create, test, validate and improve product designs for a range of consumer goods. This position will be involved with every step of the development process from the blueprint of an idea to mass production. Alarm.com product development process requires innovative engineering solutions in balancing ID, cost, size, performance, reliability as well as maintaining manufacturing and assembly feasibility with best materials, processes and techniques that are available. This position requires a resourceful and innovative, product design engineer with effective problem-solving and strong decision-making skills with a careful eye for detail. Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will work very closely with the Technology Director at Design Studio as well as with many cross-functional teams, including Industrial Design, Electrical Hardware Engineering, RF Engineering, Thermal Engineering, Optical Engineering, Acoustics, Reliability, Packaging, Safety, Tooling, EMC, Program Management and Operations. Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will also delegate and manage product and packaging design, test, validation, prototyping and simulation tasks to the Mechanical Design Engineers of partial or complete new projects with the supervision of the Technology Director at Design Studio.

Key Qualifications

‣ BS or MS degree in Mechanical Engineering

‣ 10+ years of hands-on product engineering design experience from the concept to the mass production phases

‣ Proficient in designing parts, assemblies, fixtures, and tooling in CAD (Creo 8.0 preferred)

‣ Proficient in using FEA tools for structural and thermal, analysis and simulations (Ansys is preferred, capability of optical and acoustic simulations is a big plus)

‣ Highly experienced in designing parts for manufacturing processes such as machining, plastic injection molding, die-casting, and sheet metal processes

‣ Good hand sketching and concept generation skills ‣ Ability to understand complex mathematical relationships that underpin mechanical analysis

‣ Thorough understanding of materials, linear and nonlinear behavior of materials under load and environmental elements, fatigue, and corrosion

‣ Expertise in the areas of GD&T, Tolerance Analysis, Statistical Analysis, Design of Experiments, FEA, Thermal Design

Duties to be Performed

‣ Involve in product idea evaluation stage to guide the product concepts to have a feasible conceptual engineering architecture and product design plan

‣ Consult with the Program Managers to gather the complete requirements of the new products, explore and research solutions to best produce the expected results in ID, size, performance, manufacturing feasibility, cost and reliability

‣ Provide CAD models of preliminary mechanical architecture and structure for design validation via virtual renderers and physical mockups

‣ Develop and conduct technical experiments to select most suitable design approach, materials, mechanical components, processes, and technologies

 ‣ Conduct complete engineering design of approved preliminary designs with CAD Assemblies and FEA simulations including interference, tolerance and clearance analysis with selected materials and manufacturing processes outlined in detail with a Hardware Design Specifications (HDS) Document

 ‣ Validate the engineering design across all involved engineering aspects such as electrical, RF, optical, audio, thermal, manufacturing, quality, compliance, and reliability to finalize the product design

‣ Coordinate with the Senior Mechanical Manufacturing Engineer to assure all design validation is performed and all documents are created to be able to hand over the design to a CM

 ‣ Follow through the Prototyping, Engineering, and Product Validation phases to compete product development process

 ‣ Coordinate with Mechanical Design Engineers to compete all packaging and peripheral accessory designs for the product developed.

Requirements for this Position

 ‣ A proven record of successfully designed products from engineering concept to finished goods in the consumer electronics industry, with indoor and outdoor products involving optics, acoustics, and Wi-Fi

‣ Expertise in designing parts for machining, injection molding, die casting, extrusion, sheet metal stamping and forming processes

 ‣ Proficiency in CAD modeling preferably using Creo software

‣ Expertise in creating assembly models using mechanism constraints for manipulation and demonstration of function and assembly

‣ Expertise in FEA simulations for thermal and structural analysis preferably using Ansys

‣ Good understanding of electronic product assemblies

‣ Good understanding of quality, reliability, and compliance requirements

 ‣ Great written, verbal, and presentation skills in English with the ability to communicate well with management and peers
