Basic Correctional Officer
The Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) is currently hiring Basic Correctional Officers (BCO) to join our rapidly growing team. The ADOC provides all of our team members with the appropriate training. Our BCO candidates will attend the ADOC Academy for six weeks prior to becoming ADOC-certified, the first of which will be in June 2019. The ADOC will begin hiring for this flexible and rewarding career position in May 2019.
- Stands watch in halls, dorms, cellblocks, yards, dining facilities, and any place inmates are located. Maintaining order, controlling movement and monitoring behavior and activity. Escorting inmates, responding to and intervening when observing unruly behavior. Provides first-aid when necessary. These duties will be conducted in General Population only.
- Supervises groups of inmates in housing areas in General Population on work details in kitchens, shops, laundries, and recreation areas within the confines of a correctional facility
- Counts inmates in General Population to include participating in lockdown procedures.
- Inspects inmate quarters for safety and sanitary conditions meeting institutional, departmental, federal, and state standards. Inspect for the presence of contraband while working in General Population
- Conducts scheduled and unscheduled searches of inmates and visitors for unauthorized and illegal items and contraband during General Population visitation.
- Completes reports and keeps records of inmate work progress, behavior, infraction of rules of conduct and unusual occurrences in General Population
- Communicate with supervisors and provide and receive information regarding staff and inmates under their supervision. Provide clear instructions to inmates. Assist with educational and vocational opportunities. Able to give work assignments and able to explain rules, procedures and services at the institution in General Population.
- High school diploma or GED certificate
- 19 years of age or older
- No domestic violence convictions
- U.S. citizenship (includes naturalized citizenship)
- Good health and physically fit
- Discharged "under honorable or general conditions" from U.S. Armed Forces (if prior military experience)
- Valid Driver’s License
- $29,959.20 - $45,532.80 Annual Salary
