Supervisor, Design and Production

The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), the largest airline pilot union in the world and the largest non-governmental aviation safety organization in the world (representing over 77,000 pilots at 43 U.S. and Canadian airlines) seeks an experienced Supervisor, Design and Production for our McLean, Virginia, office. The Supervisor, Design and Production, is responsible for overseeing design and production staff to ensure all art requests meet the Association's standards and that art and physical items are of high-quality and delivered on time. The position is also responsible for implementing ALPA's design and brand governance for print and digital uses.

Along with overseeing a team of designers and production project managers, the Supervisor will guide design and layout across the team; perform quality control; and, ensure customer satisfaction throughout the process, including the finished product. They will develop original ideas and produce print and digital materials for use across the Association. They will also oversee the ALPA intake and project management system that tracks all projects across the department.

The ideal candidate will follow design trends to keep ALPA products current while meeting the Association's goals. Success in this position requires supervisory experience, patience, and the ability to communicate effectively with member volunteers, MEC Officers, colleagues, and staff. Their people and communication skills with peers, members, and Officers are sound and they have demonstrated the ability to multitask on multiple projects in a fast-paced and collaborative team environment.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required; or, the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five (5) years of related experience in a very demanding production or design environment required, ten (10) or more strongly preferred.
  • Significant successful experience working with external vendors of print and promotional products.
  • Possesses a thorough understanding of ALPA Communications policy.
  • Strong knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, e.g., Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, XD.
  • Experience project-managing multiple projects and clients simultaneously.
  • Has the ability to explain design intentions and choices to clients in plain terms.
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred.
  • Adaptive, modern design instincts and experiences to apply to print and digital mediums.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, oral and written, for effective interaction with internal staff, external contacts, and pilots.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Must possess exceptional time management skills; be able to work in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment; and, transition easily between projects.
  • Complete knowledge of printing processes: paper and ink selection, production timelines, review, and delivery.
  • The ability to occasionally work long and after-hours to support rush and priority projects.

Constantly operates a computer/smartphone/tablet. Vision, corrected or uncorrected, mut be acute and discriminating. Regularly required to maintain a stationary position, move about the office and the local metropolitan area, determine what others have said or written, and converse with others and exchange accurate information.

Regularly required to sit, stand, bend, reach, and move about the office and travel. Also includes occasional bending, stooping, squatting, and/or pushing and pulling or moving, e.g., to pack, unpack, and/or move cases.

Occasionally required to move, raise, reach, and/or retrieve binders, books, boxes, and files up to ten (10) pounds (lbs.). While on travel, could be responsible to move, raise, reach, and/or retrieve luggage weighing as much as 50 lbs. (Assistance may not always be available.)
