Job Description

Job Summary:

Directs process engineering projects with the goal of commercializing pressure sensitive adhesive tape constructions utilizing manufacturing assets and processes. Assesses current capabilities and implements new technologies/assets to drive manufacturing upgrades and improvements. Manages a team of six process engineers to drive manufacturing technology improvement, new product development and commercialization, as well as continuous improvement and cost reduction of existing products and processes. Critical processes of focus will include polymerization scale-up, drum mixing, web handling, and roll good coating and manufacturing for the production of pressure sensitive tape constructions. Interfaces with Operations and Quality to ensure newly developed constructions satisfy production processes and ISO requirements. Drives collaboration between engineering team and chemists to ensure newly commercialized products reflect customer accepted prototypes developed by the technical teams.

 

Essential Functions:

· Directs new product development scale-up and engineering. Leads product/process improvement of current products. Designs & conducts trials on production-scale equipment.

· Responsible for managing product development projects in the Innovation portfolio in the scale-up stages to produce commercial products. Designs and specifies production scale processes and conducts validation thereof.

· Leads a team of six process engineers to decide appropriate scale-up plans for commercial production, to ensure proper safety protocols are followed, and to identify new manufacturing technology for the production environment.

· Performs a variety of engineering tasks, which include but are not limited to preparation of experimental and validation activities for new and existing products.

· Preparation and review of developmental protocols, batch records, other documentation in chemical processing, coating and slitting/finishing areas.

· Leads development of the new manufacturing technology which influences company-wide competencies. Provides expert input in improvement of existing systems.

· Documents project work, issues reports, and maintains files on projects. Completes any necessary regulatory forms. Interfaces with Quality to ensure proper ISO guidelines are followed.

· Consults with technical director, operations and sales personnel on group priorities and strategy.

· Takes an active role in setting overall R&D direction & strategy. Participates in business planning process with emphasis on justifying and installing a pilot coater. Establishes program priorities, objectives and responsibilities for engineering group.

· Participates and leads cross-functional product development teams.

· Interfaces with customers on new product applications and networks externally to assure the highest level of competence is maintained.

· Develops skills and evaluates performance of department personnel. Mentors and influences other associates.

· Makes identifiable and substantial contributions to continuous improvement. Performs all duties consistent with established AR guidelines consistent with ISO-9001 and ISO-13485.

· Represents the organization in a professional and positive manner to associates, external customers, and vendors.

· Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by management.

 

Job Specifications:

· A high impact, mature, self-confident leader who can lead a group of six process engineers to higher levels of cross-functional impact in Innovation and operations.

· BS degree (or higher) in chemical engineering, chemistry, polymer science or materials science.

· Minimum 5 years of experience in product development commercialization.

· Knowledge of acrylic polymerization scale-up.

· Knowledge of adhesive coating technologies (i.e. web handling, slot die, knife over roll, etc.).

· Understanding of roll good slitting preferred.

· Excellent program prioritization and coordination skills, ability to manage multiple priorities.

· Ability to maintain confidentiality of AR information.

· Excellent oral and written communication skills, along with strong leadership interpersonal skills.

· Familiarity with design of experiments and statistical software packages (i.e. Minitab).

· Ability to develop and present effective technical presentations to internal and external customers.

· Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

· Must be able to travel to customers and vendors.
