As a start-up producing environmentally sustainable graphene, our client is looking for an Electro-Mechanical Design Engineer who is passionate, hardworking, and a stellar communicator. They are looking for someone who matches their enthusiasm for the greater good and their drive to get curious about all things regarding sustainable graphene.

About the Role

The Electro-Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for the design, development, and testing of their graphene production process. This includes mechanical and piping system design, interface with electrical power systems and troubleshooting and modifying the unit controller. This candidate will also be responsible for conducting design reviews with senior engineers and carrying out various aspects of the testing program. A successful candidate will have excellent written and verbal communication skills, broad engineering knowledge and desire to build and test at a rapid pace.


  • Designing, building and troubleshooting laboratory scale test equipment
  • Developing and troubleshooting Raspberry Pi, Arduino programming
  • Selecting and integrating Commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) components into a process/system design
  • Developing CAD designs and models
  • Conducting basic engineering calculations involving fluid flow, power consumption, and structural design
  • Creating and adhering to design and test schedules
  • Experience running tests and analyzing & interpreting data
  • Familiarity with lab equipment and hazards


  • B.S. degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering.
  • 5-8 years of industry experience developing engineering hardware.
  • Demonstrated experience through projects at the university or professional level.
  • Good judgment – the ability to determine appropriate action and mitigate risks sometimes with insufficient data.
  • Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • The ability to work well with other team members, lead projects to completion, and work independently.
  • Interest in working in a fast-paced research environment.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience in a very small or a startup business
  • M.S. degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering
  • Preference for having developed laboratory and production equipment

Logistical Requirements
  • This role will be onsite located in Washington D.C.
