Senior Accountant / Controller Real Estate

Acumen Companies, a multidisciplinary, opportunistic real estate development company, is looking for a high-energy and hands-on Senior Accountant /Controller to perform and or oversee all accounting functions related to new development projects as well as stabilized projects and other lines of business.

Manages multiple real estate accounting projects and jr accounts to provide accurate and timely client reporting for assigned portfolios of Acumen affiliated properties. Implements processes to ensure compliance with reporting requirements. Manage client and banking relationships for multiple accounts.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in accounting with the right mix of technical accounting, general ledger accounting, financial analysis, and communication skills to enable him/her to communicate effectively with various departments and collaborate with staff at all levels across multiple functions. He/she will be an enthusiastic team player who is detail-oriented with the ability to work independently.

The position is based in downtown Washington, DC.

EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5 years of Quickbooks knowledge/experience required.

  • 5 years Real Estate Construction and Property accounting required

  • 5 years of Real Estate Investor Reporting

  • 3 years of Procore knowledge/experience preferred.

  • 3 years In-depth Knowledge of Financial Modeling with Excel required

  • Knowledge of Prefered Equity and Waterfalls

  • EDUCATION And EXPERIENCE: Degree from a four-year college or university program with an emphasis in accounting required. A minimum of 7 years prior accounting, finance or related experience required to include prior management experience. CPA preferred.

  • Supervisory Responsibilities: Provides formal supervision to Jr. Account(s) within a single functional or operational area. Approves subordinate's recommendations for staff recruitment, selection, promotion, advancement, corrective action and termination. Effectively recommends same for direct reports to next level management for review and approval. Plans and monitors appropriate staffing levels and utilization of labor, including overtime. Prepares and delivers performance appraisal for staff. Mentor and coach team members to further develop competencies. Lead by example and model behavior that are consistent with the company's values.

  • FINANCIAL KNOWLEDGE: Requires in-depth knowledge of financial terms, principles and compliance. Ability to calculate complex figures. Ability to forecast and prepare budgets. Conducts financial/business analysis including the preparation of reports.

  • Communication Skills: Ability to comprehend, analyze, interpret AND communicate most complex business concepts and documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive issues. Ability to write reports, manuals, speeches and articles in a professional style. Ability to make effective and persuasive presentations on complex topics to employees, clients, top management and/or public groups. Ability to motivate and negotiate effectively with key employees, top management, and client groups to take desired action.

  • REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve advanced problems and deal with a variety of options in complex situations. Requires expert level analytical and quantitative skills with proven experience in developing strategic solutions for a growing matrix-based multi-industry sales environment. Draws upon the analysis of others and makes recommendations that have a direct impact on the company.

  • SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY: Decisions made with in-depth understanding and interpretation of procedures, company policies and business practices to achieve general results. Responsible for setting department deadlines. Errors in judgment may cause long-term impact to co-workers, supervisor, department and/or line of business.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (not limited to):

Senior Accountant / Controller

  • Active involvement in day to day operational accounting activities

  • Maintenance of company books and general ledger via Quickbooks and Procore

  • Prepares financial reports for internal and external use including banks and investors

  • Prepares monthly and quarterly reconciliations

  • Verify and initiate bank draws on current projects

  • Interprets financial transactions and resolves accounting discrepancies

  • Develops and implements processes with a focus on automation, scalability, and efficiency

  • Manages month/quarter/year-end closing processes to include maintaining and communicating closing schedules

  • Performs financial analysis of accounting data and transactions to identify significant fluctuations for review and accuracy

  • Continuously identifies/implements work process improvements to streamline accounting methods

  • Assists with the preparation of financial statements, including the statements of cash flows
