The Opportunity

Abt Associates is hiring an environmental analyst to join its U.S. Domestic Division in providing research, data analysis, communications, and policy support for environmental programs with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other government clients. The candidate will provide technical assistance and program implementation support, especially in areas related to chemical safety and risk management, sustainable chemistry, pollution prevention, environmental justice, and other areas of national interest.

Positions can be fully remote with the preference to work occasionally from one of our offices in Rockville, MD, Cambridge, MA, Durham NC, Atlanta GA, New York NY or Denver CO to meet and work with colleagues in person.

Core Responsibilities
  • Works with a team of multidisciplinary staff to develop and implement federal environmental policies related to pollution prevention, chemical risk management, and green chemistry.
  • Supports scientific research and data analyses, especially involving chemical information (e.g., leading the collection of data on safer chemical alternatives.)
  • Develops tools, models, and other resources to effectively communicate scientific information to the public (e.g., developing content for webpages and fact sheets)
  • Applies quantitative and/or qualitative analysis techniques and methods.
  • Plans and executes communications and outreach efforts, including partnership engagement activities and webinar and in-person events.
  • Manages tasks independently, reviewing work for accuracy and quality.

What We Value
  • BA+3, MS + 0 years of experience OR the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Required: background in environmental science, environmental policy, environmental economics, chemistry, biology, and/or related fields.
  • Required: interest in using scientific knowledge to advance national environmental policy priorities protecting human health and the environment from toxic chemical exposures.
  • Required: Ability to work in team settings by communicating clearly, meeting deadlines, and exercising initiative to resolve complex challenges. Candidate must be able to work independently, completing complex tasks under indirect supervision where there is latitude for independent action and decision-making.
  • Required: Strong attention to detail and quality.
  • Required: Excellent oral communication, writing, and analytical skills are essential.
  • Preferred: Experience supporting projects or programs related to environmental issues such as air or water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, oil or hazardous substance spill mitigation and clean up, or toxic substances.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulations and statutory authorities (e.g., Toxic Substances Control Act, Pollution Prevention Act), regulatory development processes, and key policies (including the Administrative Procedure Act).

This position offers an anticipated annual base salary range of approximately $56,618.52 to $79,265.93 and may vary by ten percent depending on candidate geographic location. Salary offers are made based on internal equity and market analysis.
