Job Description: Job Description, ARCH Specials Business Development Manager Job Title: ARCH Specials Business Development Manager FLSA Status: Exempt Summary Coordinate activities between customers, technical sales, engineering, and 10 ARCH production facilities, for special indexable, round, and PCD cutting tools. Responsibilities include business development with major customers, originating proposals, overseeing design, assembling quotations, and coordinating orders within the ARCH Cutting Tool organization. This position is located in Mentor, OH with occasional travel, and includes building a solid technical sales and engineering team in the future. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. · Understands the basics of processing PCD, indexable, and solid carbide special cutting tools, and can become intimately familiar with the manufacturing capability of each one of ARCH’s manufacturing plants. Possesses either (preferably all…) an applications, manufacturing or engineering design background. Familiar with the processes used to make indexable tools; (turning, milling, grinding, heat treating, etc.) Round tools (material selection, pre-forms, hard ground blank preparation, grinding, fluting, honing, coating, etc..) insert production (grades, pressing/extrusion/injection molding, top/bottom/periphery/form grinding, honing, coatings etc…) , and EDM operations. All the basic processes of manufacturing cutting tools. · Understands edge preparation and hone sizes and shapes as they relate to different materials to be machined. Understands blueprints, tolerances, run-out, various tool holding systems, etc… · Understands coatings available from a variety of suppliers for different applications. Maintains and grows relationships with coating suppliers, to stay abreast of the latest technology as it relates to solving customer challenges and differentiating ARCH’s solutions from the competition. · Understands cutting tool applications from the end-user point of view. Knows what questions to ask a customer when the tooling RFQ received has incomplete information. (What material are you cutting? How are you holding the tool? Lathe or machining center? What is the tool failure mode or what issue does the customer want us to help them solve? Finish, tool life, throughput, or are they just quoting price? · Be able to “qualify” or evaluate the customer or the RFQ’s potential – Is this a account/inquiry we want to send to outside Sales to personally contact? Do we need to go see the operation and is it large enough potential to investigate in person? Do we want to aggressively pursue this RFQ with personal attention/aggressive price/short lead times because it’s a great match for ARCH? Or is this RFQ just not really our target and we “no quote” or quote regular price and delivery, appropriately. · Possesses outgoing confidence to reach out and ask probing questions to understand the customer’s requirements, as well as follow up on quotes. · Has a basic understanding of industry standards for cutting tool applications and use: Materials (P,M,K, etc..), feeds, speeds, DOC, how tool radius and geometry affect performance. Lead angle, radial/axial rakes, etc… Understands how customers use metal cutting tools on lathes and machining centers. · Understand “great” opportunities when they come in and communicate/coordinate with field sales or for in-person follow-up. · Able to work independently with minimal supervision. · Able to mentor and develop a team of direct reports, both engineering and internal customer service/quoting staff. · Excellent communication skills via phone, email, in person, on quotations. · Operates with a “sense of urgency” in responding to customer requests. · Good interpersonal skills, comfortable calling/communicating with new people/new inquiries both internally and externally. Ability to develop meaningful “mutually beneficial” long term business relationships over the phone with customers, plants, and suppliers. Honest and trustworthy. “Customer Service” oriented, willing to “go the extra mile” to please the customer when required. · Can build trust and good working relationships with our manufacturing plants to the point every plant has confidence in this person’s ability to represent them in the market. The expectation is that this position would be acting on various business unit’s behalf when quoting and selling, therefore the BU’s need to have confidence in this person. · Can research and establish basic quoting guidelines in the name of “speed” with each manufacturing plant. Will develop procedures and processes to “speed up” quote response times. Open and willing to collaborate with various internal engineering and manufacturing staff, when complex tools or new types of tools are requested. · Able and willing to make outgoing calls to follow-up on quotes and get feedback. · Generate external reports to monitor performance of ARCH Specials for themselves, internal, and external sales staff; Quote times, On Time Delivery, lead time, sales, # of quotes, # of orders, hit rate, RMA’s, etc… Competencies To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies: · Collaboration Skills – the ability to work together through idea sharing and thinking to accomplish a common goal · Organizational Skills – the ability to use your time, energy, and resources in an effective way so that you can be successful · Communication Proficiency – the ability to communicate with others properly and clearly. · Technical Capacity – the ability to learn and retain practical knowledge about the business operations · Initiative – the ability to access and initiate goals & objectives independently. Estimate 20%. Education and/or Experience Bachelor's degree or equivalent; or one year of experience in industry business development and/or research. Language Skills Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Mathematical Skills Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Reasoning Ability Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Computer Skills To perform this job successfully, an individual should be efficient in utilizing the quoting system, ERP, computer savvy maneuvering around the PC/Microsoft Office suite. This PC skill is secondary to the industry knowledge but developing a speedy efficient admin staff would otherwise be required.
