Who we are: ALS Therapy Development Institute (ALS TDI) is the first-ever nonprofit biotech, and the largest drug discovery lab in the work focused 100% on finding treatments for ALS. ALS TDI employs a team of 30 researchers and an operations staff who works to raise awareness and funds to support this critical research.
Day in the Life: As a Visual Designer, you will play a pivotal role in crafting visually appealing designs that leave a lasting impact and ensure brand integrity. From concept development to final execution, your expertise will shine through various mediums such as digital design, web design, multimedia marketing, brand identity design, and more. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams, you will have the chance to bring forth your creative ideas and contribute to the visual identity of our brand.

Day in the Life: As a Visual Designer, you will play a pivotal role in crafting visually appealing designs that leave a lasting impact and ensure brand integrity. From concept development to final execution, your expertise will shine through various mediums such as digital design, web design, multimedia marketing, brand identity design, and more. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams, you will have the chance to bring forth your creative ideas and contribute to the visual identity of our brand.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead design projects for all ALS TDI marketing/communications collateral from concept to delivery utilizing a variety of visual elements to raise awareness of ALS TDI's mission and work.
- Ideate, design, and execute creative graphic design projects that align with ALS TDI's mission, goals, and audiences, including but not limited to, responsive website designs, brochures, flyers, invitations, annual reports, annual appeal letter campaign print production, signage and posters, slide decks, stationery, infographics, email newsletter templates, digital ads, branded swag, social media campaigns, and more.
- Develop design mockups, page templates, and user interface design guidelines for responsive web design to ensure that websites remain consistent and on-brand while providing a positive and accessible user experience across devices. Handoff designs and assets to a team of developers.
- Lead creative projects while collaborating with internal teams and external partners. Working closely with the Senior Director of Marketing and Communications on project concept, scope, timeline, progress, and output.
- Ensure a consistent look and feel that adheres to and supports brand, visual, and messaging standards.
- Create or source original work that expresses the ALS TDI brand; ex. event and program logos, illustrations, infographics, photographs, and digital campaigns.
- Maintain a strong relationship with print production vendors to manage projects and create the best value and highest quality products.
- Experience with basic video editing or willingness to learn.
- Ensure quality checks and proofing for any final produced items.
- Ability to organize and categorize deliverables.
- Other duties and responsibilities that may be assigned.
- Comfortable using project management software to manage tasks and communicate with other team members (we currently use Asana for project management and Box.com for storage)
Key Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in graphic design, digital media production or related fields.
- Minimum 3-5 years of graphic design experience including web design.
- A comprehensive understanding of processes involved in print, digital, and web design and production e.g. typography, color, stock and ink choices, pre-flighting, printing presses, optimal file formats for print versus digital, web versus video.
- A portfolio demonstrating a wide variety of print and digital design and web design.
- This position must have knowledge of brand identity design, creating and managing design systems, typography, grids, visual hierarchy, color theory, photo editing, iconography, illustration, user interface design, accessibility standards, and fundamental graphic design theory.
- Strong attention to detail, ability to take direction and critique; and understanding of prioritization and schedules. Able to handle multiple projects with a flexible attitude and ability to adapt to change.
- This position requires someone who can ensure that all work has proper internal proofing and owner approval. This includes ensuring proper formats are followed and final preparations are completed.
- This position requires someone who can prioritize, organize, and manage a substantial workload. This includes being able to complete jobs in a timely manner or on a specified deadline.
- This person must have exceptional listening skills and must be willing to interact cross-departmentally and translate needs and ideas into effective design.
- The qualified candidate must have advanced skills in Adobe Creative Suite applications: InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop. Experience with Final Cut Pro/Adobe Premier is a plus.
- Experience using Figma of Adobe XD is a plus.
- Experience using Adobe After Effects is a plus.
- This position is mostly remote, but 1-day per week in the lab located in Watertown, MA is preferred.
