Certified Medical Assistant

Under the supervision of Lead Medical Assistant, assist physicians and staff members in providing optimal ambulatory health care to patients; stock and maintain exam rooms and stations; assist with clinical; and clerical duties.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Clinical duties:

1. Prepare patients for physician visits by recording chief complaint, brief history, vital signs

2. Assists with exams, tests, routine screenings, and other clinical procedures as directed by the physician

3. Inspect exam rooms for cleanliness and ensure that the equipment is in working order

4. Prepare and administer medications with physician’s authorization

5. Change dressing, apply bandages, assist in removing sutures and other first aid procedures

6. Performs phlebotomy

7. Collect and dispense lab specimens

8. Screen and follow up on test results

9. Maintain supplies, equipment, stocking and sterilizing instruments

10. Dispose of bio-hazard waste according to OSHA standards

11. Provide patient education regarding office policies, medications, management of disease, home treatment, and special diets

12. Administer, keep a tally, and document immunizations in binders/electronically

13. Comply with the immunization program (VFC) requirements.

14. Ensure complete and accurate documentation, appropriate filing, and completion of medical records before filing.

15. Triage emergency calls, pharmacy calls, and respond as per the physician’s instructions.

16. Follow through on assigned tasks with physicians daily

Administrative duties:

1. Greet and escort patients to exam rooms and cashier upon visit.

2. Coordinate referrals with hospitals, testing labs and other service providers

3. Maintain documentation and log of sample medication closet

4. Attend staff and educational meetings

5. Orient the patients to the policies and procedures of the health center in timely manner

5. Maintain appropriate documentation and up to date medical records

6. Process mail and pending charts of the physicians including but not limited to lab pending

7. Manage and facilitate/maintain physicians schedule, travel and lunch times

Additional duties include:

1. Assist other health department staff working with non-English/limited English speaking patients

2. Provides general information about clinic hours, requirements, staff, services, etc.

3. Flexibility in assuming duties in the front office and medical records

4. Other duties may be assigned and not limited to the above

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Knowledge of medical terminology

2. Experience with general office software (Microsoft Word, spreadsheets and EMR)

3. Provide services in courteous and pleasant manner

4. Ability to put the patient at ease, make the patients visit smooth

5. Ability to maintain confidentiality

6. Knowledge of OSHA specific infection control guidelines

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Bi-lingual individuals

REQUIRED LICENSURE AND/OR CERTIFICATION:

Certified Medical assistant (CMA, RMA) certificate is required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. High School Diploma or equivalent

2. Graduation from a recognized medical assistant program

One year experience in an ambulatory care setting
