Job Responsibilities/Duties
This position is for a Mechanical Engineer for the 222-S Laboratory. The 222-S is a large analytical laboratory that supports many sampling and analysis activities at the Hanford Site. This position provides plant engineering support to maintain and improve the facility systems, including installation of specialized analytical equipment.
Responsible for providing technical engineering services in support of laboratory activities. Performs a variety of engineering duties including, but not limited to: design, drafting, developing and approving work packages and Engineering Change Notices (ECNs), conducting field walk downs, developing specifications, performing and/or reviewing calculations, testing, design/procedural reviews and assisting in the planning and execution of field work. Develop conventional to highly complex engineering solutions to technical problems. May serve as a lead by directing the activities of Technicians and/or other Engineers as assigned.
The Mechanical Engineer will incorporate conventional engineering or scientific practices and a variety of complex features such as complicated technical requirements, application of new or special materials or processes and difficult coordination or oversight requirements into problem solving and program planning.
Provide limited guidance and direction to less senior engineering professionals. May function as lead specialist engineer on a task force or special assignment, coordinating the activities of the task force engineers from the discipline specialty.
Carry out development and qualification programs on tasks concurrent with other phases such as design and fabrication to better evaluate and minimize future problems. Develop alternate solutions to existing problems.
Perform all detail work necessary to determine best solutions.
Evaluate proposals and make recommendations based on proposed projects/tasks in area of assignment.
Coordinate and work closely with other engineering, logistics, financial and program management disciplines to define system specifications and requirements.
Generate complete design specifications of more complex projects.
Prepare costs and schedule estimates on proposed projects/tasks in assigned area.
Demonstrate cost and schedule consciousness through timely completion of assigned tasks and projects.
Demonstrates interpolative, patterned thinking and requires minimal guidance.
Prepare manuals and other documents supporting or publicizing the technical effort.
Demonstrate creative ability through problem solving, engineering reports, technical papers, articles and patent disclosures.
Conduct site/area visits, experimental investigations and analyze engineering problems, propose solutions and alternatives and provide recommendations.
Verify and comply with engineering documentation standards and test procedures.
Support the development of technical proposal and provide comments on technical content and level of effort of the proposed scope.
Required Qualifications
BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering or other related technical discipline with 9 years related experience including experience in plant engineering operating, maintaining and upgrading plant equipment and systems.

Registered Professional Engineer (P.E.)
Experience with installation and maintenance of laboratory sample analysis equipment.
