Job Description

Principal Tasks

  • Working in the Ethernet Access Engineering group
  • Help direct the relevant engineering teams for new feature development
  • Broaden and augment the Market Requirements provided by the Product Line Management group
  • Decomposing high-level Market Requirements into the appropriate level of detail for the various engineering disciplines to partition the work and move to the next level of functional decomposition
  • Communicating these more detailed requirements in written form
  • Tracking the activity of the relevant standards groups to support the implementation of Carrier Ethernet features in the system
  • Responsible for reviewing and providing feedback on Product Requirements and Engineering documents
  • Demonstrated ability to perform research and drive new technologies internally and represent this work externally within the industry
  • Demonstrated ability to work at the architecture level in any area of the system and aim to be company level expert in a significant technology domain
  • Provides consulting across the company for a significant technology domain to a number of different projects
  • Provides technical leadership to a team of engineers to develop a feature in the system
  • Considered as an expert in the department in one or more technical areas

Supplementary Tasks

  • Participate in development planning and high level design discussions with Engineering Management, Product Planning, Development, Test and New Product Introduction teams
  • Coordinates work teams
  • Provides technical support to project team members
  • Implementation of industry standard and proprietary product features
  • Demonstrates expertise in a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures
  • Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
  • International and domestic travel required. +20% (average 1 or 2 weeks per quarter)

Skills/Qualifications/Training/Experience

Required Skills:

  • Undergraduate degree (minimum) in CS, EE or related field
  • 12+ Years of relevant experience
  • Embedded software development experience in telecom equipment manufacturing company
  • Indirect experience with other key disciplines such as Hardware/FPGA
  • Experience in the following broad areas with in-depth knowledge in one or more sub-areas:
    • Bridging and L2 Services (Carrier Ethernet technologies)
      • L2 Bridging and VLANs
      • MEF L2 Services
      • SOAM FM/CFM
      • SOAM PM
      • SAT
      • SyncE and IEEE 1588v2 (PTP)
      • L2 EVPN
    • Routing and L3 Services (Routing technologies, IPv4/IPv6)
      • IPv4/IPv6 Routing
      • MEF L3 Services
      • TWAMP
      • L3 VPNs
      • Routing Protocols (OSPF, BGP, BFD, IS-IS)
    • Security
      • Algorithms for integrity/confidentiality
      • PKI and Certificate/Key Management
      • Management Plane Security (TLS/SSH)
      • Data Plane Security (MACsec/IPSec)
      • Crypto device certification (FIPS 140-2/3)
  • Both written and verbal communication skills are extremely important
  • Able to work with Engineers in remote locations/time zones

Desired Skills:

  • Experience in the following broad areas with in-depth knowledge in one or more sub-areas:
    • MPLS
      • MPLS Forwarding
      • Control plane protocols (LDP, RSVP-TE)
    • Segment Routing
      • SR Forwarding
      • SR data plane (MPLS or IPv6)
      • SR control plane (OSPF, IS-IS, BGP-LS)
      • TILFA
    • NFV

Requirements & Work Environment

  • Required to be in the office Monday through Friday as the job involves constant interaction with other Engineering teams like Software and FPGA
  • Job involves sitting for extended hours
  • Job involves travel some of which could be international with long travel times and physical strain
