Processing Lab Manager
Start-up company looking to hire salary based senior organic chemist or chemical engineer with 10+ years’ post-graduation experience to execute mid-scale processing of plants to extract and purify beneficial molecules. A minimum requirement of a master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry or Chemical Engineering required. Higher degree desirable but not required.
Looking for an individual experienced in hydrocarbon extraction, and various distillation, chromatography, HPLC and filtration processes. Experience with managing employees, product development, scheduling, packaging, and product development is preferred.
This is an on-site position so physical presence each day is required. The location of the manufacturing and processing facility is located in an industrial district in Kalkaska, MI, approximately 25 minutes east of Traverse City, known for its natural beauty, wineries, breweries, amazing food and outdoor adventure.

S/he will have responsibility for directing and managing all areas of extraction/manufacturing, strategic planning, quality standards, regulatory compliance, SOPs and KPIs. As an ideal candidate, you will have exceptional leadership, communication, analytical, and organizational skills. You will work closely with the production manager of the entire grow and extraction facility to carry out the vision of the company. This role represents a unique opportunity to participate in the business strategy and organizational development of a new and growing company as a member of its senior executive team.
Evaluate, improve, and establish SOPs and KPIs that align with best practices.
Provide and apply a current understanding of industry best practices, supplier network capabilities, and category/market trends to team members and business partners.
Provide subject matter expertise for evaluation of best practices: manufacturing (including scheduling), data collection, equipment selection, packaging and automation.
Assist with managing P&L and budget for the entirety of extraction / processing / manufacturing activities, including all aspects of operations and quality.
Develop and deliver innovative solutions to continuously improve product quality, reduce manufacturing and operating costs, increase efficiency, and improve overall operation.
Ensure consistency and efficacy of product through quality control testing procedures.
Establish procedures that optimize the efficiency of 42 Degree’s manufacturing facilities, allowing them to function at the highest level of productivity.
Develop Quality Control policies and protocols according to regulatory requirements.
Manage, implement, and maintain the necessary programs and processes for ISO 9001 compliance and/or cGMP compliance.
Understand various types of extraction processes and equipment. This includes hydrocarbon, C02, and other.
Responsible for product compliance with Federal and State regulatory requirements as well as ensuring compliance with Corporate, Health, Safety, Sanitation, Quality, and other regulations.
Employee Management; hiring, performance reviews, terminations, scheduling
Coordinate resources internally and externally for efficient, just-in-time manufacturing using lean principles and TPS style management.
Report to leadership team weekly
A minimum of 10 years of progressive managerial experience in operations in the food or beverage manufacturing/processing, extractions, consumer packaged goods, pharmaceutical, or other relevant industries.
Master’s degree in Chemistry, Operations, Engineering or related degree. Advanced degree preferred.
Proven strategic experience in overseeing all aspects of a professional production laboratory environment, managing multiple employees.
Experience / exposure to cannabis or other product formulation and processing, post processing techniques, winterization, separation, isolation, product refinement, fractional distillation, etc.
Demonstrates excellent motivational leadership skills and fosters a collaborative team environment.
Broad knowledge of standards of manufacturing technology, equipment, food safety, organizational development/management, finance, and employee relations.
Basic knowledge of demand planning, distribution and warehouse management, logistics and transportation, purchasing, and customs compliance experience preferred.
Continuous improvement/LEAN/Six Sigma experience preferred.
Experience diving into details and also taking a higher strategic view of the business when necessary.
Highly motivated, self-directed, innovative, and able to work independently or among teams with keen judgment, common sense and resourcefulness.
Adapts and thrives in a demanding start-up, fast-paced environment.
Operates with a high level of professionalism and integrity, including dealing with confidential information. Must understand and comply with the rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of Michigan’s cannabis laws, no felonies in the last 10 years.
