Job description

General Summary

Uses imaging technology and radioactive materials to diagnose and treat illnesses and injuries.

Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
  • Obtains patients? histories from electronic records, patient interviews, dictated reports, and by communicating with referring clinicians. Prepares comprehensive interpretive reports of findings.
  • Performs and interprets the outcomes of diagnostic imaging procedures including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computer tomography (CT), positron emission tomography (PET), nuclear cardiology treadmill studies, mammography, and ultrasound. Reviews and transmits images and information using picture archiving and communications systems. Communicates examination results and diagnostic information to referring physicians, patients, and families.
  • Evaluates medical information to determine patients? risk factors (such as allergies to contrast agents) and to make decisions regarding the appropriateness of procedures.
  • Provides counseling to radiologic patients to explain the processes, risks, benefits, and alternative treatments.
  • Confers with medical professionals regarding image-based diagnoses.
  • Coordinates radiological services with other medical activities. Documents performance, interpretation, and outcomes of procedures performed. Establishes and enforces standards for protection of patients and staff.
  • Develops and monitors procedures to ensure adequate quality control of images.
  • Administers radiopaque substances by injection, orally, and as enemas to render internal structures and organs visible on x-ray films and fluoroscopic screens. Recognizes and treats complications during and after procedures including blood pressure problems, pain, over-sedation, and bleeding. Treats malignant internal and external growths by exposure to radiation from radiographs (x-rays), high-energy sources, and natural and synthetic radioisotopes.
  • Participates in continuing education activities to maintain and develop expertise.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities including discussions of areas where risk of error is high.
  • Implements protocols in areas such as drugs, resuscitation, emergencies, power failures, and infection control.
Common Expectations:
  • Participates in Medical Staff activities as required and/or as requested.
  • Observes the Bylaws and Rules and Regulations of the Hospital and the Medical Staff.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the assigned patient population. Assesses and interprets patient age specific data and provides appropriate, age specific treatment.
  • Provides direct patient care to assigned patient age group(s).
  • Demonstrates a commitment to patient, visitor and staff by: complying with all applicable safety regulations; learning the impact of medical errors and methodology that will lead to reduction of errors; reporting actual and potential errors, as well as hazardous conditions; identifying opportunities to standardize processes and "error proof" systems that will lead to increased safety; and participating in safety education programs and root cause analyses as required.
  • Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control
  • Standards; participates and contributes to Quality Assurance Plan and performance improvement initiatives
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.
  • Prepares written documentation as required by the profession and the department, such as evaluation results, individualized treatment plans, progress reports, and other such reports.
  • Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation.
  • Supervises, assists, and evaluates students in the clinical education setting.

Minimum Education:

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) Required or
  • Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) Required
Work Experience:
  • Experience obtained during residency. Required and
  • Significant experience with computed tomography, magnetic imaging, and/or nuclear medicine/positron emission tomography. Required
Licenses:
  • Basic Life Support Upon Hire Required and
  • Licensed Medical Physician and Surgeon Upon Hire Required or
  • Licensed Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Upon Hire Required
Courses and Training:
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible. Upon Hire Required and
  • Graduate of an accredited Radiology residency. Upon Hire Required
