Job description

Lead Tournament AdministratorPosition Overview

We are seeking a Lead Tournament Administrator to plan and run our competitive events. The ideal candidate is an existing tournament director dedicated to precision and operational excellence. You will manage the logistics, coordination, and practical rulings on the floor of our club tournaments as well as assist with our prestigious championship events.

Key Responsibilities

1. Event Leadership

  • Serve as a tournament director & arbiter for US Chess and FIDE-rated events.
  • Use a deep understanding of US Chess and FIDE rules to make confident rulings.
  • Balance the "letter of the law" with practical sportsmanship on the floor.

2. Operational Excellence

  • Organize excellent tournaments thinking about lighting, layout, and signage.
  • Coordinate venue logistics, including table setups and spectator flow.
  • Ensure supplies like clocks, sets, notation sheets, etc are prepared for players.

3. Digital Workflow & Administration

  • Use Google Workspace to manage data, communicate, and schedule.
  • Ensure timely and accurate pairings, results and submissions to US Chess using SwissSys and proprietary software.
  • Maintain professional and timely email communication with players and stakeholders.

4. Customer Service

  • Use your knowledge of chess and education to provide excellent customer service to visitors and tournament participants
  • Educate new players and students on chess, tournaments, and other processes
  • Diffuse difficult situations that might arise from competition and personality clash

5. Chess Instructor

  • Teach school chess programs, camps, and academy classes.
  • Manage instructional classrooms and ensure safety.
  • Provide fun, organized, stimulating, entertaining, and easy to follow lectures that motivate students to learn, play and win the game of chess.
  • Ensure an orderly and safe dismissal and remain until all students have been picked up by their approved caregiver.
  • Serves as a substitute coach to cover absences, etc.
  • Must gain and retain CPR certification.
Desired Qualifications
  • Certification: US Chess Local TD certification (or higher). FIDE National Arbiter or higher titles are a plus.
  • Tech Savvy: Skills with Google Workspace and pairing software.
  • Experience: 2-3+ years of experience running tournaments
Physical & Schedule Requirements
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Availability to work weekends, weekday afternoons and evenings
  • Need to be able to lift 30 lbs
  • Reliable transportation
