Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. This position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek.

About the Position

The Voter Registration Specialist provides voter registration services to eligible voters who maintain residency in Maricopa County. This position focuses on processing voter registration applications, including additions, changes, cancellations, and other list maintenance duties for the Maricopa County voter registration rolls. In addition, this position will assist with a variety of other election-related duties, including petition certifications, provisional ballot processing, and signature verifications.

The Maricopa County Recorder's Office (MCRO) is responsible for voter registration, the maintenance of the voter rolls, and early voting. Maricopa County has over 2.6 million active registered voters. It is our mission to maintain the integrity of the voter rolls in accordance with federal and state law while serving the needs of new and existing voters. MCRO is also responsible for recording all documents required by law to be made a public record. We are leaders in using the latest technology to better serve our community. We continue to be at the forefront of e-government, with over 156,000,000 images available for viewing at our offices or on the Internet. Since 1999, we have accepted documents electronically, and currently, over 93% of all documents are submitted in this format.

We Require

  • Two (2) years of responsible clerical and/or administrative experience
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Other combinations of education and experience may be considered in substitution for the minimum qualifications.

Other Requirements

  • Must be registered or eligible to register to vote
  • Must pass applicable background screening
  • Must attend and successfully pass the next scheduled Secretary of State Election Officer Course, attend a forensic handwriting analysis training, and continue to maintain an Arizona Certified Election Official certification

Job Contributions

  • Utilize a computer to access voter registration files for data entry and proofing voter registration records into the Maricopa County Voter Registration system (ERO) and the statewide Access Voter Information Database (AVID)
  • Process voter registration forms to determine voter eligibility; update and cancel voter registrations in accordance with federal and state law and county policy
  • Research and process voter registration records for returned/undeliverable mail; generate, prepare, and send correspondence to voters, including voter registration cards, and other voter notification letters. Operate mailing equipment to fold and insert voter registration correspondence
  • Assist with incoming and outgoing mail sorting for the division
  • Research and verify signatures for recall, initiative, referendum, and candidate nomination petitions
  • Perform research and signature verification of provisional ballots to determine eligibility
  • Prepare, scan, and index voter registration forms and other voter registration correspondence to create electronic images for the voter registration system. Analyze scanned documents to ensure accuracy and clarity
  • Transfer all original documents to the warehouse for storage in accordance with Arizona State Library, Archives, and Public Records retention and destruction schedules
  • Provide customer service to the public in person and by phone, and assist voters with voter registration and voting information

Working Conditions

This position requires extensive mandatory overtime during the Primary/General Election cycles. Employees in this position must be able to lift from floor to shoulder and shoulder to waist a minimum of 20 pounds, and carry or push/pull a minimum of 20 pounds for a distance of 50 feet.
