Job description

The UNH Community Sailing Centre seeks one FJ/420 Instructor and four Bug/RS Tera/Opti instructors. The UNH Community Sailing Centre is located at the UNH Sailing Centre in Barrington, NH. Classes are structured in separate one-week sessions. The UNH Community Sailing Centre's well-designed curriculum guides instructors while offering opportunities for innovation in instruction.

Duties/Responsibilities

Safety & Supervision (60%)

  • Supervise and mentor youth sailors, ensuring a safe and supportive learning environment.

  • Conduct daily safety briefings and debriefs to enhance participant learning and reinforce key concepts.

  • Operate boats safely for instruction, supervision, and emergency response.

  • Set a positive example through professional conduct, respectful language, and adherence to the Corinthian spirit of sailing.

Instruction & Lesson Delivery (25%)

  • Provide instruction in one-design dinghy sailing, focusing on skill development, safety, and sportsmanship.

  • Deliver engaging, structured lessons based on the UNH Community Sailing Centre curriculum while incorporating creative teaching methods.

  • Demonstrate and teach proficient boat-handling skills for FJ/420s and/or Bugs/RS Teras/Optis.

  • Plan and organize lessons, adapting to varying skill levels and learning styles.

Communication & Participant Engagement (10%)

  • Communicate effectively with parents and participants to provide progress updates and address concerns.

  • Foster a fun, inclusive, and educational atmosphere that encourages youth sailors to develop confidence and a passion for sailing.

Equipment Maintenance & Setup (5%)

  • Perform routine maintenance, rigging, and minor repairs on boats and equipment to ensure functionality and safety.

  • Assist with setup and breakdown of sailing equipment each day.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma

  • Employment contingent of the successful completion of a background check and the following Campus Recreation provided training: USNH Protection of Minors, 'CPR, AED & First-Aid', Bloodborne Pathogens, and Risk Management training.

  • Strong Supervision and Safety Awareness: Ability to maintain constant vigilance and ensure the safety and well-being of youth participants in waterfront settings.

  • Program Implementation and Creativity: Knowledge of planning and delivering engaging, age-appropriate activities while fostering a fun and inclusive environment.

  • Risk Management and Emergency Response Skills: Familiarity with risk management procedures, with the ability to respond effectively to routine and emergency situations, including administering basic first aid.

  • Effective Communication and Team Collaboration: Strong interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with participants, parents, and colleagues, as well as the ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.

Compensation Pay Range

$18.00/Hour
