What is vertical integration strategy?

Vertical integration strategy is a business approach where a company expands its operations into different stages of the same production path. This means a company may take control over its suppliers (backward integration) or its distributors/retailers (forward integration). The goal is to increase control over the supply chain, reduce costs, improve efficiencies, and gain competitive advantages. This strategy can also help companies secure supply, improve product quality, and capture more profit margins.
