Job description

Job Description The City of Appleton is currently accepting applications for a vacancy in Public Works. Applicants should have experience in equipment operation, refuse collection and snow plowing operations. Work will include general labor in all areas of Public Works including construction, garbage collection, equipment operation, forestry, snow & ice control, and maintenance of utilities.

Applicants must have the ability to deal effectively with the public. Examples of Duties Essential Job Functions Drives refuse trucks on designated refuse collection routes and disposes of collected refuse. Performs minor equipment maintenance, cleaning, and repair.

Assembles and delivers containers. Grinds brush and yard waste material. Hauls gravel, leaves, snow sand, etc.

to and from work site or designated area. Maintains regular punctual and predictable attendance, works other shifts, overtime and extra hours as required. Other Job Functions Drives a variety of City vehicles including Vac All, all classes of dump trucks, holder, loaders, skidster, patch machines, crack filler, router, compressor, rollers, flushers, snow plows with wing and performs associated work tasks.

Plows and hauls snow. Salts streets and sidewalks. Performs street patching and repairing.

Assists with asphalt paving, concrete repair, and other street maintenance & construction Performs miscellaneous painting, sand blasting and other maintenance tasks. Performs any and all duties of Laborer and Operator I & II. Typical Qualifications Requires experience in street maintenance, refuse collection and in the operation of heavy equipment or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills: Thorough knowledge of the precautions necessary to work safely in and around vehicular traffic.

Knowledge of the operation of vehicles and heavy equipment. Knowledge in the types and uses of common hand tools. Skill in the operation of computer equipment, including GIS and Microsoft applications.

Ability to read and understand street maps and directions. Ability to perform minor equipment repairs. Ability to understand and carry out oral and/or written instructions.

Ability to work and make decisions under limited supervision. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public, and to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner. Ability to withstand a variety of temperatures.

Ability to operate heavy equipment. Valid driver's license and good driving record. Ability to maintain and prepare accurate records and reports.

Ability to properly barricade work sites in accordance with the City of Appleton Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) Manual and the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) standards. Ability to wear a respirator Ability to perform tasks, which require frequent standing, climbing, reaching, squatting, bending, pushing, pulling, lifting and carrying. Required to respond for emergency operations.
