Summary

The Line & Grade Instrument Man II provides the expertise and coordination in using the surveying equipment to ensure that the work is laid out in the most effective and accurate way possible. Coordinates layout activities with the Party Chief, Superintendent and/or Foremen for the installation of layout on a project. Has a good understanding of our SQP goals and collaborates with project leadership to identify improvement ideas. Contributes to effective project management through daily observations and communication. Supports the field in resolving any conflicts with tolerances and field constructability issues in the installation of the work. Contributes to safety on the project by perpetuating the IIF culture.

Roles and Responsibilities

The Line & Grade Instrument Man II will possess competency in the areas listed below in order to perform his/her role in a safe, productive, and effective manner. Note that the areas listed are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by co-workers assigned to this role. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all the responsibilities, skills, efforts, or working conditions associated with this job.

  • Responsible for accurately maintaining all physical site dimensions and controls 
  • Responsible for accurate layout of building location, structures, and dimensions throughout the project 
  • Assists in establishing procedures and coordinating with the client to define primary survey points and transfer building control on the site 
  • Establishes secondary control and communicates procedures to individual work crews 
    Implements procedures to adequately provide layout methods and check/re-check 
  • Provides required data to Party Chief to establish defining points needed in a data collector 
  • Calculates and monitors concrete hold quantities on a daily basis 
  • Maintains communication with Party Chief, Superintendent, Foremen and other trades to coordinate project layout 
  • May serve as the Party Chief on smaller projects
  • Sets up and checks accuracy of surveying equipment through pegging and double centering, or other methods 
  • Validates calculations and other information provided by the Party Chief/Superintendent 
  • Reviews construction documents for accuracy, deviations, and conflicts and writes clarification requests accordingly
  • Collaborates with Party Chief, Superintendent, Foremen and other trades to resolve constructability conflicts 
  • Interfaces with Formwork Engineering department to provide layout for formwork shop drawings 
  • Maintains field notes and documentation generated by layout 
  • Reviews and understands construction drawings and identifies discrepancies 
  • Responsible for communication of changes and maintenance of technical drawings, as-builts, clarification logs, etc. 
  • Knows and applies general construction tolerances in the application of work including the determination of the most stringent tolerance and its use
  • Sets example by following safety guidelines including but not limited to wearing PPE on jobs, staying aware of surroundings, etc. 
  • Attends and participates in Tool Box Talks and provides input for Safety Task Analysis 
  • Complies with proper safety procedures
Requirements

The Line & Grade Instrument Man II will possess the knowledge, skill, and/or ability in the following areas essential to perform the functions of the position.

  • High School Diploma and 4 years’ construction experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience 
  • Must have 2 years’ experience as an Line & Grade Instrument Man I
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers and regulatory agencies 
  • Good listening skills 
  • Ability to work within a team environment
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume; understanding of geometry and trigonometry 
  • Knowledge of industry tolerances
  • Working knowledge in the use of the coordinate system
  • Ability to work harmoniously, respectfully and effectively with subordinates, peers, supervisors and clients 
  • Team player, who provides information to the workforce, resolves conflict, and provides feedback 
  • Ability to direct work
