Job description

Swim Lesson / Water Safety Instructor

Swim Lesson / Water Safety Instructors will plan, teach, and report course records of swim lessons for Indian River County. Morning and evening hours available. Friday are makeup days for any potential weather cancelations.

We are looking for individuals with experience in teaching, swimming, and/or a passion for helping others. The State of Florida requires swim lesson instructors to have a certification through an aquatic agency. Indian River County offers American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification at a discount for anyone who teaches for our aquatic department.

Essential Job Duties
  • Plan, organize, and implement swim lessons for various ages and ability levels
  • Be a positive role model by promoting aquatic safety
  • Responsible for lesson set up, clean up, and identifying needed materials
  • Keep track of participants progress on checklists and report class records
  • Be prompt, on time, and ready for lessons each day
  • Deliver excellent customer service to participants, parents/guardians, any persons attending
  • Strong collaboration with other swim lesson instructors, aquatic recreation coordinator, and pool staff
  • Report any concerns or injuries, and maintain a safe and clean teaching environment
Typical Requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • High school diploma or equivalent desired
  • Swimming experience and ability to teach in various depths of water
  • Teaching/instructor experience preferred, but not required
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions on class instruction
  • Ability to demonstrate skills and utilize equipment to demonstrate skills
  • Ability to communicate with Recreation Coordinator of Aquatics and people of all ages, both orally and written
  • Knowledge of facility rules and program rules
  • Maintain strong character and unquestionable integrity

Education and Experience Required

  • Prior teaching or instructor experience preferred, but not required
  • 18 years and older
Supplemental Information

Work Environment

Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the duties of this job.

  • Swim lessons occur at outdoor aquatic facilities that can experience changing weather conditions, including wind, rain, thunderstorms, high heat, humidity, etc
  • Exposure to moderate noise levels.

Must have physical strength, balance, and stamina necessary to complete jobs in various areas and depths of the pools and pool deck

  • Must be able to work in different temperatures and changing weather conditions.
  • Must be able to traverse and inspect all areas of the teaching area.
  • Exposure to characteristic County Park environments.
